    You should read that book, btw. I think you'd appreciate all the absurdities contained within. It's a fun read.

    Thurn and Taxis (Tassis at the time) ran an efficient postal service in the 1200s in Italy. Over several centuries and several countries, they continued in the postal business until some time in the 1600s when they sold it. Descendants still alive and nobility to this day.
    In Thomas Pynchon's Crying of Lot 49, he has Thurn and Taxis running a secret postal service, their drop-off boxes identified by their distinctive muted post horn logo -



    In the book, people who use the service also use stamps that look ordinary until you spot little anomalies, like the post horn, or an extra feather. The secret post is used by all kinds of underground sorts, including, of course, the Illuminati.
