Yeah they get inside me too. I don't understand how someone can't be affected with melancholia by them. The reaction to it as though it is discord is something I'll never understand. Maybe it was watching all those movies when I was a kid, the lonesome mouth-harp in prison movies and the like. These tunes often put me in mind of something like Brubaker, which for all I can recall might have no such tunes in it.

Autoplay just took me straight to that, which I love.

This performance always softens my heart:

Love it. Those howling harmonies, as I call them, are so blue. These spirituals really do a good job of expressing the 'sojourner in this vale of tears' trope. Some of the best stuff to come out of protestantism.

I don't think that's the right way to read it. To see the medieval church as political in that kind of sense misses the point imo. If one considers the pacifying effect upon the Freudian Father of a father who is infinitely more 'monstrous', demanding, who's injunctions and commands are law. What interests me is how the Church's entire philosophical edifice regulated subjectivity often through clearly paradoxical arrangements of elements. The symbolic rule of the father was ostensibly absolute (within the inter-subjective domain of social reality), yet it's place in the natural order was subject, and not master within the absolute reality. That's where I go with it.

Damn, I knew it was an eastern saint from the cross she's holding, but I was stumped. Had never heard of her. The Catholics love their conquering queens (and that's not a comment on the gay mafia currently running the Vatican!).

Have to admit to a soft spot for St Clare the Poor, St Francis of Assisi's contemporary. Similar thing in the rejecting marriage proposals.

She calls into question the actual relationship between patriarchy and the church. On the one hand the church embodies patriarchy (under the Name of the Father), yet on the other hand lots of women escaped the possibility of arranged marriages and did so with the blessing of the church.
