What is privacy worth?
I have been thinking about this for quite some time, and don't value it very highly at all. Not only is it practically impossible to protect one's privacy, it often ends up being a serious impediment to just about everything.
Does privacy or confidentiality do anything for you? Is there a real value that can be seen from it? If so, do you think it is enough value to justify how often it gets in the way? |

I use to try to be private, but I found it to be... repressive. Over the last several months I have been trying to be more and more open... and it's just freeing. Freedom of expression creates opportunity... it helps you go after what you want. Putting yourself out there completely affirms your worth.
Though, not sure I understand exactly what you mean by 'privacy', but I mean in the broadest meaning of the term. There is certainly a great deal of value to having privacy. For example, your own personal living space or what have you... a place to be alone... personal property, etc.

Privacy is needed for only those that have something to hide.

privacy is a level of comfort about one's place in the public world... it means different things to different people
A good e.g. is you not using your actual real name on this forum, and perhaps also having in your profile details that might make it easy to find out where you live.

I'm not big on privacy within my local community and friends. There's not much I mind people knowing and I accept (without a dickfit) that a certain amount of gossip is part and parcel involved groups.
That said there have been times when I've become far more guarded, especially where things are being written down and opinion runs neck and neck with 'fact'. I'm probably more wary of 'systems' and companies being able to access details than someone 2 doors down. Even so, being skint at least has with it the benefit of not being the most attractive of targets to begin with and, frankly, having less to lose. Privacy's a daily issue in my job and at times a minefield, especially when families expect we should actively seek to involve them but the person does not want that - obviously the net result is a pissed off family! I would say I have a tangible and difficult ethical dilemma re privacy about once or twice a week, for something which looks so simple on the face of it, it frequently isn't. |

Privacy is important to me. I'm not really into urinating, masturbating, fucking, and singing along with my favourite tunes in the public eye. Even though everyone knows I do them, I still want privacy for those activities.
Additionally, I want privacy when having a heart to heart conversation with someone, or even just relaxing and making not quite socially appropriate jokes. Even though I'm pretty open about things, I place an extremely high value on privacy in the small handful of areas that I perceive as mattering. |

Floppit, I hear ya. I think you have summed up the problem (professional type) clearly. I have clients who don't want anyone to know something, then their 'caseworker' has a 'case conference' where they require the file to be available for everyone to peruse.
One of the ways I have mitigated that risk is to give a copy of the file to the client. This works twofold. One, I am careful to put nothing in the file that the client would not want in the file. Two is that they are encouraged to review their file often, remembering that it could be requested by some others. It isn't a great answer, but better than what was presented to me by the old fuckwits who are my supervisors. I noticed a client come in to see their file (they are allowed...it says so explicitly in our paperwork). The person they asked asked them why they wanted to see it, then made them wait, then when asked for a copy, resisted and said that it would cost to have it copied. When I am asked, I hand over the paper folder, then ask or say anything I think I need to. As far as my home privacy goes, I pull the curtain when I am fapping, but if someone peeked I would likely be a bit flattered, a bit embarrassed and let it go after. I do, however, rage when corporations track what kind of products I buy... (ineffectual rage, mainly...) |

Have your thoughts on privacy changed in the last few years?
I think more of us are willing to have our personal lives examined closely by google, but not by the creepy guy who was eyeing us at the bus stop yesterday. |

If the government demanded all the info google, amazon, and the like collect, people would be up in arms. lol, fasism, corporate government partnership. The CIA has at least one public contract with Amazon..how many are unknown for all these various entities we provide all our details to... Liberals don't know what fasism is, this is why they vote for it, seeming free or cheap stuff, which fasism provides.

I take a similar approach to online privacy as I do to physical privacy. Open up the shades and walk around the house naked. Ain't no one wanna see my fat ass, and maybe this will get you to stop looking
