Most people here leave the leafy debris over winter to help protect the plants. We often have no snow cover and cold winds that reputedly dry out the frozen soil and harm roots. I don't know how useful it is, but that's the local procedure.

I think that's right. I definitely heard one of the man ones quack the other day then the females starting quacking much louder and simply would not shut the duck up

That isn't my actual front yard but it's pretty close. My neighbors used to complain but they have given up.

I just mow crtain areas of weeds and call it lawn.

Tbf, about half what I mow is actual grass, because it's a bit shaded and is also over the septic field.

Rocks and clay. Actually, in the past years some tree seeds got caught in the Agave and now there is a 25 foot Hackberry growing in the middle of the Agave cluster. This has given the "yard" enough shade for actual plants to survive the summers without water, so I have a collection of green life forms congregating around the agave.

With the rain and mild temperatures this winter, the pinks have had a good year and the front yard is decorated with them in profusion. They won't make it to summer, but for now it's kind of nice.

We call them pinks but I think they are also a species of primrose.

To me, lawns are evil things. They are an incredible waste of resources. Unless something is going to eat the grass and convert it to meat, there is no reason to grow "Grass" on purpose and no reason at all to use water to grow it, or use chemicals like fertilizer, or weed killer, to keep it "healthy" and certainly no reason to use gas to mow it every six weeks or so.

Lawns are just like "fashion". Absurd.

Wait...

Serious now: bats were keeping ours well under control until whitenose fungus started killing them all off.

Encouraging birds that eat them help, or any amphibians that eat them.

Deet's the only repellent I've found that actually works. And it is of course bad for you.

The first-known case of white nose bat syndrome has been identified in Manitoba, the province said Friday. A researcher involved with the discovery said the devastating disease was found at the largest bat hibernation site in Manitoba and can wipe out anywhere from 30 per cent of a population to an entire cave.

The disease, a fatal fungal infection that sees bats die of starvation after waking up while they are supposed to be hibernating, was confirmed to have infected bats in the Lake St. George area.

Early June bugs banging on the window screen rn.

Big fat flying beetles, make buzzing sounds with their wings, are very clumsy and crash into everything. Cats, dogs, everything else that eats loves them for snacks.

Utterly harmless, but I have a friend who is so spooked by them that if she has to go outdoors at night during their season, she wears clothes that completely cover her, gloves, and a hat, and duct tapes her cuffs so they can't get in.

There's a bunch of species. I think they are called chafers in Britain. There are fancy green and striped ones that we don't have also.

They have enormous white overwintering grubs.

Looked up Christmas beetle:

They aren't the same species but they are also in the scarab family, so close enough.

Ours are shorter and wider, but otherwise similar. Yeah, they are loud when they smack into the screen or window.
