If you freeze eggs, take them out of the shells first. Ice cube trays work really well, and then you transfer them into ziplocs after they are frozen.

These Silkie Chickens - the fluffy ones - are a really old breed. They sound neat.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silkie

They are calm, friendly, good mothers, lay 3 eggs a week, have an extra toe, and blue earlobes. What's not to love?

I've heard of those. Their flesh is very dark, too. So, if you eat one, it's kinda intimidating.

Reading the silkie link, I see that..

Their capacity for incubation, which has been selectively bred out of most egg-laying fowl, is often exploited by poultry keepers by allowing Silkies to raise the offspring of other birds.
I'd never really thought about it before. The instinct to incubate being bred out of chickens that is.

it's also weird how they lay an egg every day, presumably the jungle fowl does that for like 4 or 5 days, someone kept one that did 6 days etc etc

Chickens prefer to lay in a nest where another hen is setting. So, the chicks that a hen raises are often the offspring of several different hens.

So this will be where the chickens live. At the moment it's a shed with a loose paved floor and a small overgrown run. By Christmas there should be a couple of layers running around.
