I was following Charlie Sheen during his break-down. You are not gonna get much more than that kind of thing.

it's best for following breaking news stories and finding the best background articles, so you need to follow a journalism geek

I follow an Australian radio journalist called Mark Colvin, @colvinius. He spends a lot of time on dialysis (a legacy of years spent as a foreign correspondent in Africa) & posts links to all manner of interesting stories & people. I was a day or 2 ahead of the Australian media when following the News Of The World phone-hacking story from London, because of him posting updates from www.guardian.co.uk.

If you can find a few people like that, Twitter quickly becomes far more time-consuming than you can reasonably afford...

I created a Twitter account a few years ago. I decided that it was too frenetic, and I didn't really need to know what people were thinking in 140 characters or less. I was following too many people/orgs, I guess.

I suppose it would be useful for following a breaking news story, or some other as-it-happens stuff.

A friend of mine, now in his seventies, was one of the first people to use facsimile machines. He loved and enthusiastically used that then novel technology. A few years ago I found to my surprise that he sees no need for a computer or the internet. There's nothing of that sort in his house. I thought his brain must have calcified. Now I wonder if my brain has too. I see no need to avail myself to twitters or podcasts.

The real problem behind all these platforms is monetization of personal information, and the slow death of advertising.

Advertising isn't dead yet, but it is dying. Television was it's heyday. Studies have shown that internet advertising is not nearly as effective as Television was. It has also been shown that younger generations build up an immunity to traditional advertising, hence the growth of "influencers" where it is the personality of the person that uses the product that is important, not the attributes of the product itself.

It is nearly impossible for an advertiser to reach me for example. I don't use social platforms, I don't pay attention to ads on youtube, I don't watch regular TV. I block most internet advertising, and avoid click bait. I have excellent email spam filters.

In fact, old fashioned mailed circulars are the one form of advertising I actually may peruse in the short walk between my mail box and the garbage bin.

Bullshit! The real-er problem is woke-driven censorship.
I have zero problem clicking on the Skip Ad button of a youtube video as
soon as it pops up. The oddest part of my experience is the number of
ads, plus the what must be super high resolution (= huge download size)
of their ads.

Bored, inventive tv scientists have created 8K tele, which is 16 times the
resolution of full HD. Great, yes! The internet pipelines will be even fuller
of pimply faced sitcoms, news reporters and talking heads. Not all peeps
on tv and in movies have flawless skin that the public wants to gaze at.

pfft, you fail to see the man behind the curtain : )

even "censorship" as you call it is driven by the profit motive. companies do things to maximize profit, and if that means "censoring" unpopular opinions and walking a politically correct line to keep from offending potential customers, that is what they will do.

and by collecting and collating your personal likes and dislikes, they know exactly where those lines of offense are, and how many people are on which side of it.

Twitter must be absolutely ablaze with the recent unsealing of Maxwell documents.

If that platform drummed up worldwide protests over one murdered adult (Floyd) imagine how much protest there will be once the 'friends of Epstein' are revealed.

Or maybe it's fine...

Twitter has consistently been politically motivated. Not as obvious in their censorship, but in their failure to apply it to their chosen 'twitterati'.
