Science finally figures out the obvious:

http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/...-be-your-genes

Quote:
Studies have suggested that humans evolved on a diet with a ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 essential fatty acids of 1:1 but that the Western diet has a ratio that is closer to 15 or 16:1. The Mediterranean diet, in contrast, is closer to having an equal balance of the two and is recommended by many doctors.
But this new study, funded by the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, shows that different people may need radically different ratios of the substances in their diet depending on their genes, and it supports the growing evidence against a one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition and for highly personalized advice.
Pass me the sausage and cabbage.

well that depends on your genetic makeup, and the genetic makeup of your gut bacteria...and unless someone knows those factors, they can't tell you what is best for you to eat...

So, everything anybody says about what is "healthy" is pretty much a generalization, ergo bullshit...

If the take-out from this study is you can eat whatever you like because there's no relationship between diet and health, then that probably isn't what the authors intended; I'm just saying...

No, the take out from the study is that unless studies are done on diet that take into account the genetics of the participants, they are mere generalizations and may or may not apply to everyone.

Quote:
Ye, Keinan and colleagues analyzed frequencies of the vegetarian allele in 234 primarily vegetarian Indians and 311 U.S. individuals and found the vegetarian allele in 68 percent of the Indians and in just 18 percent of Americans. Analysis using data from the 1,000 Genomes Project similarly found the vegetarian allele in 70 percent of South Asians, 53 percent of Africans, 29 percent of East Asians and 17 percent of Europeans.
I also went and read some more of these guys work, and found out that Asians have a resistance to alcoholism, probably from an early introduction of fermented rice foods.

My reboot of my nutrition means I am quite new to aiming to eat 'on purpose'. My previous method was 'whatever is easiest' coupled with 'all of it'.

With the bodybuilding industry and others promoting lots of supplements (and 'supplements, I have settled on apples and diligence.

By this, I mean that I will make the best whole food choice I can, each time I eat. Also I will show up for every workout. If some supplement can improve on that, I will listen. So far, the only ones which seem anything more than guessing are a protein supplement (I get enough, and vary the sources) which doesn't appeal because I know how to eat. The other is creatine, but that one has, as its biggest claim, larger muscles which look better.
I'm 45 years old. I don't CARE anymore lol. Anyway, I still think, even if this is true, that I am best off with my 'apples and diligence' program, but are there certain gut microbes which can indicate which foods work best?

It's tough to do better than I have been, but I kind of jump on any diet improvements I find. I recently switched oatmeal to oatbran...so small changes now.

Oh, and I meant to add, low or no carb diets, or gluten free, or anything CAN work, as long as calories are correct. While each has their place, I don't follow any deliberately. I do wonder, however, if identifying those with 'vegetarian allelles' could help them out by directing them to non-meat protein supplements?

Have you heard of RbutR? It is something I have plugged in, and it spat out a rebuttal to the page you linked.

http://appliedmythology.blogspot.ca/...ozen-list.html

No worries, I will still browse what you offered, and the rebuttal, but more to the point, what do you think the danger is?

I have access to lab services and can test for anything which is a real concern. My apples mainly come from a grocery (non-organic) and have a USA label.

If there is something I should test for, I would. I would also share the results. As I said, I will read the (WOW! Does that link ever look green-washed) link you provided, will you read the rebuttal?

More importantly, will you start using rbutr? It is a plug in with great potential, and folks like you using it will improve it considerably.

Until some real danger in apples is identified, I will keep eating them. GMO if I can get them Until then, I will go with info such as this:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3135239

Such findings suggest that the potential consumer risks from exposure to the most frequently detected pesticides on the “Dirty Dozen” list of foods are negligible and cast doubts as to how consumers avoiding conventional forms of such produce items are improving their health status.
