Rowan Williams - Left Wing?

So let's get this straight. Following my post about Richard Dawkins holding a "debate" with Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, I came across this January 2012 article from the New Statesman. It purports to draw a contrast between Rowan Williams with his predecessor, George Carey.

The message of the article is that Carey is right-wing and Williams is left-wing. So have I understood this correctly? Williams, the current chief executive of the Church of England, who has opposed gay marriage and women bishops, who directs a ridiculously wealthy organisation and whose main job when the time comes once every hundred years or so is to stick an obscenely overdecorated diamond hat on the head of some thoroughly undeserving aristocrat - is Left Wing?

It sounds like the New Statesman comes from the same school of political obfuscation as the inventors of the 'political compass'. If we want to make the terms right wing and left wing completely meaningless, then this is the way to do it!

The terms have been useless for a while.

Not really. It's more that the terms have been misused for a while.

No, it's really that terms have been useless for quite some time.

Define left wing in one sentence, and then define right wing in one sentence.

'Left wing' means refusing to define left wing in one sentence. 'Right wing' means seeking to define right wing in one sentence. (It's all about context, you see)
