[explain]Imp is always looking for ways to bring joy to other posters. However, he is extremely limited in the number of ways he can do this effectively. Eventually he decided to focus on cheering up any fellow curmudgeons who might be present. As such, if you do not fit this category* then you won't enjoy the joke. It is important that you understand the distinction between not being the intended audience and being the butt of the joke. Imp means you no harm.

having a dog is excellent for developing a health gut microbiome; I have just read and greatly recommend Ed Yong's I Contain Multitudes

Quote:
We also change the microbes of our housemates. Gilbert?s team found that room-mates share more microbes than people who live apart, and couples are even more microbially similar. (?All that I am I give to you and all that I have I share with you,? as the marriage vows go.) And if there?s a dog around, these connections become super-charged. ?Dogs bring in bacteria from the outside to the inside, and they increase the microbial traffic between people,? says Gilbert. On the basis of his results, and on Susan Lynch?s work showing that dog dust contains allergy-suppressing microbes, the Gilberts got a dog of their own. He?s a ginger-and-white mix of golden retriever, collie, and Great Pyrenees, who answers to Captain Beau Diggley. ?We saw the benefit in increasing the microbial diversity of the home, and we wanted to make sure that our kids had that capacity to train their immune systems,? says Gilbert. ?Hayden named him; where did the name come from, Hayden?? Hayden replies: ?From my head.?

It's a fascinating subject. Now ask yourself, if one of the primary effects of fluoride in toothpaste is to kill oral bacteria that cause cavities, what is drinking it in tap water doing to your gut bacteria?

After we had to expand our water supply to include river and other surface water sources they had to increase the amount of both chlorine and industrial fluoride. Our aquifer water was in a much cleaner and more naturally fluoridated state. You could smell the chlorine in the water after the change.

But I think what really destroyed my gut bacteria was a major abdominal surgery and the related antibiotics. It was after the surgery I developed what they are calling IBS.

Since I still have my appendix, I had hopes that the bacteria would return and things would become normal again, but doesn't seem that it has, or will. Pro and pre biotics help for a little while, but it doesn't seem to be able to build a sustainable, permanent colony. Strangely enough, my mother also developed IBS after her Hysterectomy, which was done as open abdominal surgery, and they took her appendix at the same time, because it was the 60's.

She has had dogs all her life, and it hasn't helped her either.

given a typical oral toothpaste contains 0.76% sodium monofluorophosphate, that is 7,600 parts per million, and fluoride is added to drinking water at less than 1 part per million, if I was to ask myself that question, my answer would be to not draw spurious comparisons between one and the other
