Found a tiny ringneck snake (about10 cm.) in the house this afternoon, live, with no tooth marks or other marks of cat attack. I'm guessing it slithered inside on its own when I had left a door open for a while. Released it outdoors into a nice cool spot under a huge hosta.

This one was black with a yellow-white belly and a bright orange neck ring.

They eat red-backed salamanders, which are really numerous here. In spring you can hardly turn over a rock or piece of wood without finding a salamander.

Saw an ex-mayor today on my run, along with his two old dogs. One of them is a 14 year old part-wolf.

The time, in the past, when it was 'cool' to domesticate wild animals isn't that far away, up this way.

It is so strange reading this as if it was a natural and normal thing to see a snake and not panic about how poisonous it is.
It does not even say if it is a venomous snake.

Our Snakes are Killers! You do not casually pick them up and take them outside.
You panic and count your hands and feet to see if you are missing any or if they are turning blue and purple about to fall off.

In fact, the ringnecks are mildly venomous, but they are so small they aren't at all dangerous to humans or really any animal bigger than a 5 cm. long salamander. They also aren't aggressive. All that little snake wanted was to get away from me as fast as possible, no attempt to bite even when handled.

Other than this, we have garter snakes which can get to be a metre or so long, and will bite but are pretty harmless, and green snakes, which are also small (and very pretty), which are harmless also and I've never heard of one biting, despite the fact that kids can't resist picking them up.

We never even think about snakes as dangerous or unwelcome.

Couldnt decide whether to put this in Lamentations or Celebrations, finally decided here was the best place.

Keyboard went screwy last night. Messed with it several times this morning. It mixed and matched on caplocks, refused to type some letters, gave up periods altogether. typed v, g, or h if you typed t. Couldn't seem to fix it.

Late this aft mr.b. wanted to use it. Got frustrated after 2 minutes (or less). Picked it up, held it overhead and shook it like a giant goddamn terrier with a great big rat, cursing at it all the while.

Set it down, delicately one-finger typed in his desired url. No prob. Smiles up at me like an innocent child. "Fixed it."
