Confirmation bias is genetic..

Another good reason not to argue with people on the internet:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0419205534.htm

Quote:
People with a variation on the gene DARPP-32 that affects the response to dopamine in the stratium allowed people to learn more quickly from experience when no advice was given, but also made them more readily impressionable to the bias of the PFC when instruction was given. Like a "yes man" who is flexible to a fault, the striatum would give more weight to experiences that reinforced the PFC's belief, and less weight to experiences that contradicted it. Researchers call this confirmation bias, which is ubiquitous across many domains, such as astrology, politics, and even science.

Who is this Gene Darpy and why is he making light of my contradictory experiences?

The article gives bad advice. In my experience giving advice is a good thing.

Yes. It did. That's why I rejected the advice.

Are you saying you have been given good advice?

Does anyone give advice they think is bad?

If people learn faster and more accurately without confirmation bias in the absence of advice, how can giving advice be a good thing?

Giving advice is absolutely a bad idea. You should charge for it, like I do for a living...

The advertising industry is based on doing precisely that. Do you really think the offerings of Macdonalds constitute a balanced diet, or that if you are a lonely alcoholic women will be all over you when you drink Smirnoff Vodka?

Are you not defending the proposition that "giving advice is a good thing?"

If not, then excuse me for misreading you.

For generations my family has believed that confirmation bias is NOT genetic, so it'll take more than some dumb article to change my mind

Why, yes. Yes, I am. Except, of course when the advice is bad.
