apparently jackdaws sometimes do a less sophisticated version of this, that is to say they will collect shiny stuff and arrange the hoard

This grey heron had a very beady eye on me and that's as close as he was prepared to let me get with an 85 mm lens.

Nice.

Great Blue Herons only let you get close if they are out of your view, then when you get about a metre away, they fly up making a terrifying heart attack inducing noise and flapping their enormous wings, then fly away croaking (laughing, I'm sure) at the human lying on their back freaking out on the ground.

There's an abandoned railway, part of it runs along a river and lake system. I was way in there, and had reached a spot where a shallow reedy stream cut into the rail bed, so the bird was below me down a slippery mud bank. Brain went completely to frazzle when the heron popped up.

Sorry.

Nope, heel skidded on wet incline and I went over backwards in the weeds, only got my heel and the back of my calf muddy.

That's a really neat area though. The rails and ties were taken up maybe fifty years ago, so just the railbed is left, and that was partly grown over with alders and other shrubs. Much of the area was pulp and paper company land, but hadn't been clearcut for maybe fifteen years at the time, lots of young woods and patches of older woods. So many kilometres of woodroads as well. Before I was married I used to solo camp on a friend's sugar bush land in the area for a couple weeks, maybe five summers altogether.

Wildlife there - deer, moose, birds - hardly paid attention to me because humans were such an uncommon sight.
