Exactly the right thing to do, especially with that tart of a cat so menacingly near.

We heard the cheeping and eventually worked out where the fledgling was sitting. I caught it in a kid's fishing net and shoved that in next door's holly tree. Immediately the parents started stuffing the chicklet with caterpillars and within a couple of minutes it had the height and fuel it needed to make a magnificent flight over to a cherry tree several gardens away where it wasn't my problem any more.
Why you gotta interfere with natural selection?

Good grief no. Witches have cats for the same reasons everyone else does. Imagine a cat acting as a go-fer for anyone.

Big neighborhood to do this afternoon. Big snake in a car, in the engine compartment. Many expert opinions were offered. Determined it wasn't poisonous, because 1. it was too big and not colorful enough to be a coral snake, and 2. it wasn't rattling. Car was started, let run for 20 minutes. No sign of snake. It is a mystery. Consensus was to leave car open overnight and hope it leaves. Woman who owns car got a ride to the store. Says she probably won't drive it for a week, at least.

Pfft! Everyone knows ancient British dinosaurs drank tea out of huge giant cup flowers. Everybody! But you won't find it in any of the so-called 'official' literature.

I suppose I should have said 'domestic cats'. Wildcats, are, of course, cats, but not unnatural.

Though I hear they can be unnaturally contrary.

My cat just squeezed himself into a bobcat costume and went huntin'. (He'd have preferred a lynx outfit, but the big feet were too hard to run in.)

Quote:
Deer flies (also known as yellow flies, June flies, three corner flies[1] or stouts in Atlantic Canada) [I have never heard anyone call them 'stouts'. They are deer flies] are flies in the genus Chrysops of the family Tabanidae that can be pests to cattle, horses, and humans. Otherwise similar in size and appearance to the ubiquitous housefly, [What? They're twice the size of the average housefly and don't look at all like them.] the distinguishing characteristic of a deer fly is patterned gold or green eyes.[2] The name of the genus refers to their coloration, from the Ancient Greek χρυσός (chryss), gold, and ὤψ (ops), appearance.[3]

Deer flies are a genus of horse-flies (Tabanidae). They have coloured eyes and dark bands across their wings. [Yes. Nothing like houseflies.] While female deer flies feed on blood, males instead collect pollen. When feeding, females use knife-like mandibles and maxillae to make a cross-shaped incision and then lap up the blood. Their bite can be painful, [yes goddammmit, one bit my arm 20 minutes ago, it was painful] but many bites are not noticed at the time, especially if the victim is distracted. Allergic reaction from the saliva of the fly can result in further discomfort and health concerns. Pain and itch are the most common symptoms, but more significant allergic reactions can develop.[4]
They are often found in damp environments, such as wetlands, bogs, or forests. They lay clusters of shiny black eggs on the leaves of small plants by water. The aquatic larvae feed on small insects and pupate in the mud at the edge of the water.[2][5] Adults are potential vectors of tularemia, anthrax, and loa loa filariasis.
Predators of the deer fly (and other Tabanidae) include nest-building wasps and hornets, dragonflies, and some birds including the killdeer.

On the bright side, first couple dragonflies showed up today. One was small with a thin yellow-white stripe along its slender light brown body. Other one whizzed off too fast to see much. There are more than 100 species in Nova Scotia alone.
