Your surname's geographic frequency in the UK

http://named.publicprofiler.org

My dad's surname's hot spot is between Norwich and Ipswich

My mom's maiden name hot spot is in Wales. I guess this makes sense. Her ancestors were Scots-Irish, and immigrated to the US from Northern Ireland.

All the "british" family names I checked were Scots/Irish.

Does that jibe with what you know of your family history?

I have no idea at all about my dad's family's pre-immigration origins.

My dad's name is pure Irish.

As for my mom's side it's all historic manufacturing towns, like, erm, Birmingham, but I noticed they are concentrated on areas with pedigree in precious metals. Considering my grandfather was a Jewish immigrant whose name followed his family's trade, it makes good sense.

Mum: LOL it must be rare as the only spot is Torquay, where she was born. Weirdass name but I thought there might be others.

It looks pretty accurate. A big concentration of my dads surname around newcastle and a few smaller concentrations elsewhere. One of these near Lincoln could be the descendents of a great-uncle.

The mothers surname shows a small population around the area she grew up in. Her dad was one of 9 and thats probably all if them and their families. It looks like they shifted over from ireland where there are huge amounts of that surname.

Husbands folks seem to have come from Gloucester, small population in Yorkshire. Thats probably us and the inlaws.

Doesn't surprise me because the German invasion was cancelled due to a miscalculation. Its planners failed to factor the possibility in that the British might decide to fight back. You'd think they'd learn from that mistake, but nooooooooo, they repeated it when they thought it was a nifty idea to follow Napoleon's footsteps.

Mine is right in the center of England - from Manchester to London. We have it traced back to 1385. Befoer that is a gap, then it's is very likely that my ancestors came over in the Norman Conquest. The Normans were Norse who settled in that part of France. My ancestors were tapestry makers for the Norman royalty and thus were granted a plot of land in England.
I have found some indication that it's roots came from a Danish term meaning
Quote:
Strike Fear in!
or it could have simply meant
Quote:
Shield Bearer.
When one gets to trying to find out about things that happened around 1000 or more years in the past it gets rather difficult.

i've noticed how all the descendants of the norman elites say that, next you'll be denying that your family have connections with the masons

I never said

Elites
I said tapestries. A kind of rug that hung on the walls. I guess the Normans liked theirs and since they had just taken over all of England they had a lot of plots of land that they could hand out. So why not give one to their favorite tapestry makers?
