my guess is there is a metaphorical poke or stir in there
so for example my guess of 'thrill' sort of worked because it essentially means 'pierce [with emotion]'. a word similar to 'tril' meant a hole or to make a hole, hence 'nostril', and the deep root is the common ancestor word for 'through' but it was poke/stir not pierce
