surrealism and war

some might argue that the conjunction in this title is superfluous.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/c...4418449.column

Quote:
A Korean War veteran tells the story of swimming in a river near the Korean Demilitarized Zone and making a horrific discovery on the river floor. A Gulf War veteran talks about the seemingly benign ways the military is glorified in toys and even pornography.

Both of these men have an exhibit in a new art show, "Surrealism and War," opening Monday at the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago's Portage Park neighborhood. This truly outstanding collection, curated by Iraq War veteran Aaron Hughes, http://www.nvam.org, shows the ways generations of veterans have tried to create meaning from the experience of war.

"And yet, no one looks at surrealist art and says, 'That's art therapy,' " said Hughes, 32. "This work isn't just about an emotional reaction; it has cultural, political and social weight."

Lol or grimace because a subscription to the Chicago Tribune is required to read the article of the first link.

As regards applying surrealism to something real, be it birth, death or war that would depend on each individual perspective.

Defense of a nation for defensible reasons has ALWAYS been a necessity. Standing up to bullies is defensible. Convincing an opponent or threat that one will act is politic.

So, the moral here is politics is just shit? Politics is necessary, in my opinion.

It's that image. I scan over it briefly but I just can't keep looking at it. Every time I try it just gets too much.

eta: it's like I get the sun in my eyes or something, and lose focus as I turn away. it's not tearful or bleary, just 'too much'.

Who was it who said "more real than reality itself" and what were they talking about? Sure it was in reference to surrealism somewhere.

I can barely imagine the impact that forty foot wall must have for anyone looking at it in reality.

Nicely done. Even if you're not right, you deserve to be.
