Night Sky - things are looking up

Venus is just colossal right now! Jupiter is also up but is massively outshone. In temperate northern latitudes anyway.

I take it you don't suffer with light pollution too badly? I should be able to spot Venus, but most of the really good stuff is lost in the neon haze.

Nah I'm dead town center but Venus is like a searchlight. Thought it had to be a chopper or plane heading my way but no, it is indeed our own Sister Perelandra. Have a look fairly low in the west in the early evening if it's clear.

yeah i've had the chopper thing out of my kitchen window a few times with Venus. And then there are the times it really is a distant jet engine but at first I'm not sure if it's just my eyes or that star really did just move and grow dimmer.

I've seen Venus like that, stopped me dead outside, even though I've watched Venus since I was a little kid. Last April it was so brilliant where I was that I took some time orienting myself to be sure I wasn't seeing something else, like a low satellite.

Land of the Midnight Sun, praying.

Quote:
Even though residents of Barrow, the northernmost town in Alaska, won't see the sun for 67 days come winter, they enjoy the midnight sun all summer - over 80 days of uninterrupted daylight. Anchorage enjoys a more modest amount of daylight in summer than Barrow - but that's still a good 19 hours between sunrise and sunset on the longest day of the year, Summer Solstice.

It's a similar principle to what daylight saving does for farmers, but this is for Santa's elves. It's so that during their busiest time of year, when they are making all the presents, they can work 24 hour days.

Slave labour.

Unless they do shiftwork. In which case, what do they do on their time off?

Exactly. Elves sleep all winter. It's just the reindeer who work, and Mrs Claus has to do a few things like load the sleigh and make a flask of bovril for Santa, and other wife stuff that doesn't count as work anyway (as any fool know).

two words:

the cows.

Because it means that at the tail end of the harvest season they can still pick crops and milk/manage a herd of cows in the earlier mornings, leaving time to get the goods transported that day.

It's how we won the war, you know

A debate which will never end and much depends on location and farming type plus a host of local factors doubtless.

Anyway, she's riding pretty high tonight in a gin clear sky where I am which is only two hours down the road from you. Hope you have good seeing also.

There is no debate. There is just those people who understand these things, and those people who don't. Quite often these silly rules are the very condition of our coherence as a society. It's why in fairy stories everything will be fine unless the princess says "pig" before noon on a Friday, in which case the magic will be lost. It is the wisdom of the ages, distilled, and brought forth in the form of rules which have long since lost their historical significance, but continue to function nevertheless.

It is nice on my balcony tonight. I might open a guiness. No actually, I will open a guinness and smoke a tab on the balcony.

What i'm trying to say is, why do the farmers care what time the clock is saying? Do they have to get back for The Archers or something?

In South Australia there is serious debate over changing our time zone to align with the eastern states. For reasons of business and commerce. (We are half an hour ahead )

Research done almost a decade ago suggested the 30-minute lag behind eastern time cost South Australia more than $500 million annually through both lost revenue and inefficiencies.

Yabut that 1/2 hour is really cute! The only place I've been to that has a half shift. I get a 'webpage not available' for the link but would love to see the in-depth research resulting in the conclusion of a half billion loss directly attributable to it.
