Yes, such a shit thing to do.

The death penalty works though. You can tell by the number of people who don't smuggle drugs anymore...........oh wait.

As a youngster, I was anti-death penalty. Taking lives is not a deterrent.

As a young adult, I am kinda pro-death penalty. Insofar as I don't think it should be outright banned; some criminal acts are so heinous, death is the proper response.

But you should be absolutely certain, and have gone through the proper course of appeals, before the sentence is carried out.

I should addend that drug crimes are in no way close to that marker.

I'm talking about violent crimes like serial killers, rapists, child predators, etc.

Bali 9
Bali bombers

If Chan and Sukumaran were the Bali bombers I would think death is an appropriate penalty. And it wouldn't matter if it were a deterrent or otherwise.

They are not the Bali bombers and I don't think the penalty is appropriate. Or a deterrent.

Well from skimming the article it seems drug-related, not terrorism-related.

I think it should be proportionate to the amount of fraud and corruption.

And the guy who approved fatal drugs, or the milk that killed babies? Fraud and corruption DOES have a HUMAN price on HUMAN lives. Sure, crappy mortgage backed securities that are bundled and sold don't SEEM like a really big deal, but how many people ended up out of work, losing their homes, and other economic life changing disasters to individuals because of a bit of "fraud and corruption"?

Fraud and corruption aren't victimless. I would say they probably have more victims than your average serial killer, just because the effects aren't fatal doesn't mean they aren't dire.

And if it would actually work as a deterrent in Any Arena, I would think white collar crime would be the most likely. It won't work on people driven to criminal enterprises like drug smuggling or dealing, or murderers.

The first few people in that article hadn't approved tainted drugs, they had stolen money by fraud. That isn't worth killing someone over.

Once someone is dead, that's it, no takebacks. And there is a disturbing number of people who have been found to be innocent posthumously.

you get someone participating in corruption that leads to death, you take everything away from them and then you lock them up. That will hurt. From king of the hill to common criminal.

I just don't approve of sanctioned murder.

Texas. In general, for the reasons you state, I oppose the way Texas uses the death penalty.

However, you have to know that doing time in the US in a white collar prison is even much different than doing time in a "regular" prison.

I am adamantly opposed to the death penalty for any reason, including the worst crimes. Our justice system isn't even terribly corrupt, yet every few years some poor person is exonerated after years in prison for murder.
