no joke, i honestly think that playing mafia has helped me to be less paranoid irl. if you're a person who has trust issues, the game will draw some intense reactions out of you at first. but by having your suspicions disproven repeatedly, it helps you to break the self-reinforcing and irrational mental habits of paranoia, and to add habits you might have been missing, like looking for reasons to trust people.

Anyway, can't sleep, so I was trying to figure out the appeal of mafia. I'm still not seeing it. I understand that I would have to actually play to "get" it. What has me stumped is why anybody would have thought up this game in the first place and got others to join.

*shrug* I don't get the appeal of drag racing or cross-country skiing, but I understand there are people who like that sort of thing. Personally, I like murder mysteries, I like roleplaying, and I like using logic, so mafia does it for me.

I can get the appeal of drag racing even if I don't enjoy it. Going fast, watching things go fast, and loud noises get the adrenalin flowing. Cross-country skiing I can see for the physical challenge and solitude of it, even if it's not for me. I guess it hinges on the role playing. The second the guy in the video told everyone it was dark/night and they closed their eyes, I groaned. When they started discussing who was what, the only "evidence" anyone had was the fat werewolf guy faking a snore after the werewolf went back to sleep. There was no basis to have any reasonable discussion about who played what, so to me the exercise became pointless. |

UY, the role playing aspect is minimal on these boards, and i couldn't even click on those youtubes, made me embarrassed for white people
in addition to what jerome said, it's also a chance to argue with people on a forum about something that does actually have a reveal at the end, is that making any sense. iow if i think you're town and jerome thinks you're scum, we can both call each other retards but there's a kinda payoff at the end

Help me get past the first day. On what are you basing your votes? Or are you just throwing stuff out there trying to get people to react? |

partly throwing stuff out there, day one needs something to happen to kick things off. There's also an element of comparing notes - if half a dozen people think a player seems nervous or defensive (or one of the other stock scumtells) then voting to lynch that person is probably going to be a better choice than a random vote
