aren't and aunt don't sound the same in my lingo.
But to confuse the issue we can and do often use two different both pronunciation of words.
I mean the same user can use two different pronunciations of the same word.

Possibly because our parents used different pronounciations, so we grew up saying daance and darnce interchangably?

Remember that Shakespeare uses interchangeable spelling and pronunciations for words because he was living through the great vowel shift.

It depends on the speaker's dialect, claiming anything else just makes you sound pompous. In many dialects they sound exactly the same, in others they sound different.

Well, as I tried to clarify in my follow up poast.
Can say it either way.
But to be fair probably more often aren'ty Daff.
Aren'ty Gloria

But it is perfectly possible to say that aren't beryl is my ant.

I have scottish(lowland), devonshire and cockney ancestors.
That has developed into the broad queensland accent.

I was thoroughly mocked (in a friendly way) in a pub in Boston for pronouncing the letter 'r' in words that contain that letter. They made me go up to the bar and ask for a Harp beer because they thought it was very amusing to hear me say 'harp'.

They did pay for the beer.

I am too old to learn Japanese. This shit looks greek to me.

http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/past_tense

Changing a u-verb from dictionary form to the past tense is difficult because we must break up u-verbs into four additional categories. These four categories depend on the last character of the verb. The table below illustrates the different sub-categories. In addition, there is one exception to the rules, which is the verb 「行く」. I’ve bundled it with the regular exception verbs 「する」 and 「来る」 even though 「行く」 is a regular u-verb in all other conjugations.
