I've used a combination of exposure therapy, with CBT, to correct this in my cat. Wetting now doesn't generate the whining, and I didn't have to put it in the refrigerator.

Homer sits on the windowsill during storms. He doesn't seem to mind getting wet. He seems to like watching lightening. He will still drop things in the toilet now and then just for wtf I don't even know. Now instead of having to put the seat down, I have to check for cat toys in toilet.

He is the weirdest cat I have ever had. He carries his toys around like a dog, or a kid, drops them almost anywhere, and forgets where he put them. I started collecting them in a bin, but he wanted to sit in the bin, so I started putting them in a clay pot. He likes to get them out, scatter them to hell and back, and then complain he can't find them. And its not just under the bathroom scale or under the closet door. I find them next to the coffeemaker in the morning, in my bed, under my desk, in his bed, on windowsills.

Most mornings, I walk to school with Nixie before driving to work.

There's a woman who's usually there (delivering kids to the school) who has two four-legged bodyguards. I'll call her Linda. (Not her real name.)

These dogs aren't specially big, but they're tough and wiry, fierce-looking, always highly alert, and rather attached to Linda. So I'm not entirely kidding when I describe them as bodyguards.

Also, they don't like men. They're perfectly gentle with kids, and have no trouble with women, but I get growled at, and so do the other dads.

(She says she got the dogs as rescues. Natural speculation is that some man was abusive toward them in that earlier phase of their lives.)

So I keep my distance. So do the other guys.

But recently I was talking with Linda (from a distance of course), and one of the dogs took a couple steps toward me, in what I thought was a non-aggressive stance. I imagined that I was being told that I was allowed to take a step forward as well, as long as I behaved myself. Linda even said (to the dog), "oh, so you're being friendly today, are you?"

So I took a step forward too. He didn't growl. His tail twitched. He took another step forward and sniffed at me.

Very very slowly, I crouched down and gave him a friendly scratch around the ears.

He still didn't growl. His tail wagged. I imagined that he was telling me: You might possibly be ok. But I'm still watching you, buddy.

So that's my story of taking the first step towards making friends with a dog who generally doesn't like men.

I'm with gib. Dog whisperer vs. dog piss whisperer.

The American DW teaches to convey one's mastery by ignoring that type dog.

Anxious, angry dogs can fuck off.

This is a good thing. If they are rescue dogs, they just need a lot of time, and they will come around. I know gib is making jokes and all. But for real.

Definitely no "thing" for Linda. But (IRL) I have a bad habit of trying to be friendly with just about everyone, four-legged people included. Hell, I'm even friendly (IRL) with political conservatives, and they're way less deserving than any anxious/angry dogs.

That said, you may be right about her not being in control. I'm not really sure.

Maybe it's not that the dog was abused by men, maybe it's that men are generally unlikeable. Just throwing that out there.
