It won't freeze. Mater Oceana Atlantica still casts a little of her warm breath our way.

It won't freeze right away, at least. Toasty warm this morning (10 C). Freezing temperatures are forecast for tonight after midnight, but of course most of that rain will have flowed down the drains and/or disappeared into the ground before then.

Around here, the worst events for ice are the times we get snow followed by rain followed by a quick freeze -- if the rain is just enough to get the snow all slushy without really reducing its volume by much.

February of 2015, we had something like four storms of that type all in a row. It really was a lot of ice. And then in March we got an extra metre of snow on top of all that. I seem to recall that I was whining here on MR about it, whining so badly that it was a bit embarrassing.

True "freezing rain" does happen here sometimes. (It sucks.) But IIUC that kind of thing is more frequent and more severe out in QC & ON.

Rain falls that is so cold it turns to ice as it touches anything, so everything gets coated with a layer of ice. The longer the storm goes on, the thicker the layer. Roads become sheets of ice. Ice coats tree limbs, and the weight gradually bends the branches and trunks, often until they break, and you get fallen trees everywhere.

And power lines fall because they also are weighted with ice:

It can take weeks to restore power after a bad ice storm.

Being outside in an ice storm is a recipe for frostbite and death if you are out too long.

I don't actually know. My guess is if he's close enough to a live fallen powerline it's gonna get him if the ground is even damp.

We get ice storms more often than snow. The city will shut down entirely for ice.

Once upon a time, my ex and I were at a friends house when an Ice storm hit. It was like 3 am and we decided to drive home. It was only 2 miles. We had a 4 wheel drive truck and figured there would be no traffic. There was about 3 inches of ice on everything.

It took us 4 hours to go 2 miles on a 5 lane road at 3 am with no traffic in 4 wheel drive. This is because anytime we got above 5 mph we started skating. Sometimes we went sideways, sometimes we even skated backwards, and often we skated in circles. Much of the time we had to hug the curb for traction. I wouldn't ever want to do that again.

Another time, the ice hit while I was driving to work. I was on a crowded expressway. I was on an overpass when the demolition derby started. Me and another woman near me had pulled over when the first crashes started and gotten out of our cars and were on the side of the bridge holding on to a light post while disaster and mayhem exploded around us. Her car got sideswiped but mine only took a light bump to the rear. We just left our cars where they were. Nobody came to tow them. They closed the expressway and let everyone go get their cars later that afternoon when the ice melted.

Anyway, ice is a poor conductor of electricity. So it's safer than water, but it turns to water so you can't trust it.

No snow. Just cold, -9 to 11 with windchill.

There's probably 8 to 12 cm. of ice on most of the lake, it has that silver-grey 'thick ice' sheen. But there's a huge rectangular area in the middle that refuses to freeze over. It's weird.
