I once drove through the far edge of a forest fire. I think we were the only vehicle on the road. For many kilometres we drove increasingly slowly because there were so many animals fleeing ahead of the smoke and flame. They paid no attention to us, they were utterly focussed on flight, deer, raccoons, skunks, porcupines, beaver, and ducks and other birds - the birds all walking because like the other animals, they all had young with them that couldn't fly.

Used to see that in Florida, animals running across the highways to escape fires. Cows too. Florida would have fires often. But the scrub pines and the palmetto bushes would come back quickly, apparently adapted to burning often.

Mondo, I had an idea. What if instead of That stupid Daylight Savings time, we started a Southwest Heat Avoidance time?

All businesses would close from 11am to 8 PM. It would help with the damn Ozone we get on hot days, and AC and energy bills. Stuff could stay open all night!

Here (this province) the environment isn't adapted particularly well for forest fires, because they are fairly rare and usually small - it's a very wet province, with more than 3000 lakes and lots of bog and wetlands. So when we do have a major (for here) fire, it takes a long time to recuperate. There was a huge fire on a mountain side when I was a kid, and the slope was still only sparsely treed by the time I was an adult and had left home. Lots of erosion, too.

You could write a book on switching night and day schedules, seeing as
you claim to already be doing so.

I remember it being 110 F at 1 a.m. one summer night here in 1969 or 1970.

I wondered that too when I lived there. Why the hell is PHX such a huge city? It's a million miles from the nearest sea port, and doesn't seem to have an abundance of natural resources. Why did it grow so big?

Just to confuse things: NE Arizona has a piece of Navajo Nation territory that does DST -- but within that piece, there's a bit of Hopi Nation territory that doesn't do DST.

Hot things expand. Found that on another forum.

However, I do know that one of my great uncles went to Arizona because it was advertised as the best place to live if you had tuberculosis. According to Wiki, both Tuscon and Phoenix had huge tent cities of people with tuberculosis.

Since then, it's just been greedy developers taking advantage of cold people and cheap land, without regard to climate or water issues.

Fun day trip. Drive from Flagstaff to Tuba City to Kykotsmovi Village to Winslow. You change time zones six times without ever leaving the state.

The joys of small lakes.

In June I reported thus:

Dunno what the water temperature was, but it felt very cold. (This is normal. Many people here would say that as a general rule, one shouldn't bother even trying until July.)

Nixie was the bravest. She got right into it. She was also the first one out. (Probably good that she didn't stay in long. Hypothermia is a real thing.)
...
I spoke with someone who said that the water temperature in that lake had been measured at 13 C a week ago, and since there were several not-sunny days in between, it probably wasn't much warmer than that.
So we went swimming a bunch of times in July, and it was really nice.

What happens in August? Well, TG and I went swimming yesterday morning, and ended up smelling like wet dogs. A neighbour told us that the water temperature had been measured at 28 C the day before. I'm really wondering about the bacterial density.

You're right to wonder.

I am a veteran of seeing groups of kids with rashes from your area's public lakes not being tested often enough - at least every day should be the norm. Mostly it isn't coliform bacteria that are the problem (though that happens also, but usually the testing is on top of that and the swimming area will be closed), but a duck parasite that uses snails as part of its life cycle.

And on that note - the coolest I got this past week was while swimming in the Bras d'Or lake - lovely cold clear salt water and fantastic views - could see Beinn Bhreagh from where we were swimming.

Down side: I always wear a hat in the sun. Except when swimming. Between 2 pm and 3:30 pm sunburnt my damn head.

We had some rain the last few days. Nice. Except, the first day of the rains, they were really small and scattered, and I was outside waiting for them, and it was warm. The rain was WARM!!

What a disappointment.

The humidity has gone down a bit the past couple days, but it is still far warmer than we are used to. No one dares to complain because it could get COLD again at any moment.

So far all but 2 days in August have exceeded normal temperatures for this month historically.

Gardens have practically run through their normal seasons; everything has bloomed ahead of time, since most plants really like heat, sun and humid conditions.

At 8 light minutes away, our sun is small in the sky, doing the math, at a light month it would be invisible, yet you all believe stars many light years away, at the same size, can be seen by the human eye.

Science debunks the vast universe theory.

Hey, so how do we see these stars so far away when if our sun was a fraction further away we could not see it.
