Maybe you should put the cat out. I'm worried about those poor starving coyotes and lynxes...

At least he's not jaunting about on fossil fuel guzzling cruise ships.

The coyotes (not a native to NS predator) are mostly filled up on summer food - rabbits and rodents and berries. In winter they like cats (ok non-native pets, like dogs, ferrets, guinea pigs) for snacks and deer (also not native) for dinners.

How are coyotes not native to nova Scotia?

They expanded their range into NS in 1976.

https://novascotia.ca/NATR/wildlife/...otes-faq.asp#4

They aren't entirely coyotes, either:

Quote:
Are coyotes found in Nova Scotia larger than western coyotes?

Yes. Coyotes found in NS are known as Eastern Coyotes and, while closely related to coyotes found in western North America, they are genetically distinct. The significantly larger body size of Eastern Coyotes has been attributed to past interbreeding with wolves, as coyotes spread northward and eastward across North America. Some individuals encountered here may be as much as twice the average size of coyotes found in southwestern North America.

Why are they so big?

The eastern coyote is basically a western coyote which has picked up significant wolf characteristics through interbreeding. This genetic make up gives the eastern coyote the potential for a much larger body size - twice the size of their close relative, the south-western coyote

Bad. Have at least two more days of cutting up downed trees and stowing all the foliage and branches somewhere. I've been constructing enormous brush piles and have spruce resin stuck in my hair. Not that spruce, just the tree.

Oh, I dabble in herbs and can charm the occasional rabbit into letting me get really close*, and once a very stupid man accused me of putting a curse on him and I do have a cat, but no pointy hat! And no wart on my nose either. Not a witch.

*I did that this morning! I used to do it when I was a kid, just walk after a rabbit slowly until they were too tired or confused to run any further and you could crouch down right beside them and have a good admiring look. Early this morning there was a rabbit in the yard and it occurred to me that I likely couldn't manage it anymore, but why not give it a try. And I got within one metre of the critter. At that point it was looking pretty nervous and giving me quite the side eye, and I didn't want to terrorise it, so I moved sideways and it ran off.

Quote:
Rabbits see things in two dimensions. They do not easily tell distance and have virtually no depth perception. This is why they tend to rely more on their hearing and sense of smell to alert them to danger around them. Their vision is important, but for up close work (like eating) they use their nose more than their eyes. Having no depth perception means they can see a dog, but cannot visually tell if it is ten feet or 100 feet away. Their vision can identify the dog, but they tend to use their other senses such as smell and hearing to determine how far away it is. Rabbits will use parallax to assist in determining the distance of an object. This is similar to what birds do; rabbits will bob their head up and down when looking at a distant object. The further the object the less it moves.

I have had a bit of rain. It makes the trails more mucky and challenging, so I'm DAMNED happy about it.

What do Bay Area Rednecks do for Thanksgiving?

Pump kin.

First time the temp has dropped below 70F since March? April? I dunno. Feels amazing I have the doors open right now. Where's Zeluvia? This will probably only last through the weekend, but we'll take it.

This weekend is our TG.

Rain tomorrow and mild, sunny for several days after, so yes, nice weather. Even still have blooming flowers. And the leaves are peaking, lovely.

I was originally gonna facesiously say "didn't you celebrate TGiving in July?" but I decided not to. Seriously 12-16 sounds really nice up there this time of year. My family has a cottage in Maine (I haven't been in nearly 2 decades) and even July/August we typically have cold mornings and pleasant afternoons.

Maine is a little colder than Nova Scotia from late summer to early spring. Being mostly surrounded by ocean we're very affected by the water temperature - warms slowly, cools slowly.

Maine is beautiful - make the family give you the cottage for a week or two.

Our place is on an island near Boothbay Harbor, so it's surrounded by water too.

Getting time there isn't the problem, it's money to get me and my familty there and also figuring out what to do with the dogs.
