I don't know anything about whatever event triggered the question.

But I can't help musing a little bit about that phrase "the Catholic opinion". The use of such a phrase could be taken as suggesting that Catholic opinion is unified. But Catholics, as a group, are actually rather diverse in their opinions (far more diverse than the Catholic hierarchy would ever want to admit).

Perhaps one could talk about the "opinion prescribed by the Catholic hierarchy", but that's an overloaded phrase that begs for a shorthand. (I'm tempted to say the "party-line Catholic opinion", but even that is a little bit overloaded.) If "the Catholic opinion" is used as a shorthand for that, then ... ok, but an awful lot of Catholics differ from "the Catholic opinion" in that case.

One might be tempted to disqualify those dissenting Catholics from using the "Catholic" label for themselves at all, but I wouldn't do that.

Not sure what point I'm making. I'm just rambling, I guess.

I take "The Catholic Opinion" to mean the official position of the Church i.e. Pope's word is doctrine.

Obviously this changes pope-to-pope and even within one Papal reign sometimes. But breaking it down beyond the official position of the Church seems like a bad way to go

I have no idea what you are talking about, but we have a large Catholic population and they listen to the pope. They don't DO what he says, but they listen.

First Jesuit pope ever. Go Jesuits!!! My personal favorite of all the Catholic orders. They are such bad boys they have been banned by the church and even outlawed in Switzerland until 1973. And what is it that they do to be so bad? They don't like wealth...

The Jesuits encourage toleration for other religions, teach other theology in their institutions, and also believe in free education for all. This emphasis on free-thinking—and especially the order’s opposition to opulent riches—has some calling them out as the founders of Socialism.
A List of Some Catholic Orders:
  • Benedictine
  • Christian Brothers
  • Diocesan
  • Dominican
  • Franciscan
  • Holy Cross
  • Jesuit
  • Lasallian
  • Sisters of Mercy
  • Sisters of St. Joseph
  • Vincentian

Well, that is interesting because historically the Jesuits where like the SS of the Catholic church. And I find it offensive that catholics are all like, Oh forget our history, yes we where as oppressive as the Nazi's and we did as monstrous things as Stalin et el, but we shouldn't be bothered by or held responsible for our history.

Like Howard didn't think he should have to apologise to indigenous Australians for English history and attempted genocides in Australia.

Hi charlou.

Catholics seem to care about the Catholic opinion very much. Thanks to Pope Francis; all of the historically oppressive people can wash their hands of their past bigotries (wealth hungry, chauvinistic sexism, gay bashing, child molesting, et al.) along with the church and the Vatican & the regressive types who have always dug their heels in the ground in the face of change can later take credit for all the hard bare handed work towards justice and equity which was actually made reality largely by progressive, and wholly outnumbered secular types.
