Can you solve this real life mystery?

About an hour and a half ago, a car pulled on to one of the parking spaces we have for the shop. These are for customers, but other people tend to use them, for example when visiting people nearby.

I stood at the shop doorway to see if they were going to come in the shop.. A man opened the trunk of the car, and was joined by what i assume was his wife and two girls, aged about 9. My instant impression was that they were Polish or something similar. They walked right past me, each was carrying a bag or an item. I noticed one of the girls was carrying what looked to me very much like a bait box, the sort anglers use for keeping maggots in. They crossed the road and entered the park. It was dark by now, forgot to mention that.

15 or 20 minutes later i was still wondering what they were doing. No one was carrying anything long enough to be a fishing rod, so it was all very odd. I decided to go and look at the car registration but as i went out the shop i saw them heading back. Again i stood in the doorway, this time i tried to clock what the woman was carrying, it looked like a plastic bag with what i think was a fishing float poking out the top.

I've run several scenarios and none of them stack up. The river is about 3 minutes' brisk walk from the shop. Reader, what do YOU think they were doing?

We use to catch guppies in local creeks as pet fish 50 years ago.

any suggestions on how i can gather more information? For example if i was* really mental i could look on the cctv tomorrow to see if they came back, which would help falsify or bolster MSG's theory that eastern europeans are probably doing something criminal if they're out after dark.

*i know

A lot of foreign fish were introduced through aquariums importing them and then they get released into the ecosystem for various reasons. Apparently, guppies have been introduced to various countries as mosquito control, but can't find any record of this in Queensland from a quick search.

For that matter, from an etymological point of view, I can't remember from fifty years ago if we used the word Guppie as an inaccurate catch all term for small fish. 'Real' guppies may have been very expensive and no one in my demographic was paying for aquariums supplied fish.

anyway they didn't have a net. Netting minnows is extremely popular amongst the local kids (nets only 1.50 get yours now) but they do that during the day for the obvious reasons

is amongst a word?

Learn Polish.

Invent a time machine and insert yourself in an advantageous position to observe their activities.

Learn Estonian just in case your hunch about polish was incorrect.

I was going to suggest the nightcrawler collection motive, because I've seen this done by Polish people in Toronto parks. But they had flashlights and spent a long time in the activity.

Maybe your family here haven't adequately learned the lore of their ancestors and were disappointed quickly by the shyness of annelids. Or forgot their flashlights. Or they were there earlier when you didn't notice because they parked somewhere else, and had carelessly left their fish floats behind and returned to retrieve them. Or they had night fishing plans but when they got there the kids whined too much and the dad said that's it you kids never appreciate the things I do for you this was supposed to be an exciting family outing in spite of the fact I work 10 hours a day six days a week and am tired but now you can just get back in the car and we'll go home and you can play your damn games that's all you ever do anyway. And the mom saw an abandoned float and being thrifty stuck it in the top of her bag.

There.
