Earthquakes are close enough to call weather. This one, a Moderate 4.5, was centered in a town called Pleasant Hill, which is about 20 miles from where I live. Guessing it was on the Calaveras fault.

I'm awake.

Is California still rationing power? I heard there were planned blackouts or something...

I wasn't near the kitchen, so I can't say from experience. The window in my office rattled impressively.

It wasn't rationing, and power is back on everywhere. So says PG&E.

Good. Crisis can get a LOT more complicated when power is out.

I hope it doesn't start raining toads...you guys have been getting hit with enough crap.

Lol I don't think so.

It stopped, actually. Currently I have steady power but am surrounded by a sea of local outages.

Dorian weakened a lot of trees, and I suspect this strong wind is just enough to bring a lot of leaning trunks onto the lines. Probably a branch or tree was banging off a power line and either fell harmlessly or one of my bolder (okay, reckless) neighbours got impatient and removed it - that's happened a few times in the past.

Our house is surrounded by mostly black spruce and fir, some of them very old and half dead, and shallow rooted because the bedrock is very close to the surface. There is tonnage of deadfalls among the standing trees, and much of the area is the same.

When I was a kid, there was a long outage, and some hick friend of mine disconnected the power at the main road, then went and asked everyone on the Cape to shut off all but their fridges/furnaces, then connected his generator and dribbled in some power. I don't know how much, but I do know he got into some trouble over it.

It was a different world, back then. Probably now one wouldn't get answers at half the doors...

You would for sure get into lots of trouble for doing that - there can be 'flashback' that can electrocute legit powerline workers. This can happen with people using generators to power their own homes if they aren't careful to disconnect the mains power at the panel.

Dunno about where you live, but I wouldn't hesitate to knock on any door in my area, even the ones that are generally arseholes (imo) would come through for a neighbour in a pinch.

There would have been no 'flashback', as he disconnected the whole Cape (at the highway)

At the time, it was easy to get everyone to agree to shut down all their non-essentials. Now, I suspect that everyone would also hook up their other essentials, like wifi, one or two screens etc.

When this happened in the mid-80's, not only was there a better-known community, but there was less powered items in our lives.

I'll post coldness updates to make you feel better.

most of the leaves blew off the trees in wind storms over the past week. The only insects left are those cotton-butt flying aphid swarms, a few ichneumon wasps, the odd small moth, and yesterday morning a poor cold bumblebee drone huddling on a hosta leaf in the early sun. Made me sad, he's doomed and alone.

The last asters are starting to curl their petals, ladies tresses are turning brown, the grass has stopped growing. Most of the non-resident birds have migrated, the only songs you hear are chickadees, nuthatches, juncos, bluejays and crows. And the occasional hunting owl.

And the sun sets around 6 pm.

We dropped firmly below zero. -6C feels like -15C.
Glad I'm not helping with roof trusses today.

I think the trails will be great. Everything frozen hard, more predictable. I will likely go for a long run this aft or tonight.

Anyone want to come? Starts with a circuit around Frame Lake Trail...

50F temperature drop in Texas today. Northern TX was 50 degrees cooler this evening than 24 hours prior. In Houston it was close to 80 today and temps should get near or below freezing tonight.

It was an amazing Texas day today. 70+ this morning and humid as hell. I broke a sweat going to the grocery store at 6 am. At exactly 2:02 pm the wind shifted from a light se breeze to a northeast Wind of Considerable Force. By 2:15, the temperature had dropped 10 degrees and the wind was gusting at 40 mph.

Currently 9pm, and its 38 degrees outside, with a 25 mph wind.

But the best thing is the smell of the wind. It smells like snow and ice.

Thanks Canada!
