The background vegetation looks pretty extensive in that final photo.

It's all the regrowth. The mallee trees grow as a series of trunks from a large underground stump - effectively branches growing off a buried trunk. Those branches die off in fire and the tree sprouts from the stump. Which is why you can see dead sticks poking up through the bushy base.

It's going to be hard work navigating through the bush for the next few years because you have to go around the bushes until they grow high enough to walk under, but you're also constantly stepping over or around the fallen burned branches.

I saw a very fat and handsome male Spruce Grouse this morning, strutting around in the driveway.

Last night i saw this youtube, along with a few others that looked familiar.

I don't even like mushrooms that much much but these were delicious. Kids haven't died yet so they so am going to get right into this.

So are they a bit sweet? We have a mushroom here called honey mushrooms that I've had a couple times and they were lovely, a bit sweet and tasting a bit of walnuts. In a cream soup, niiice

Nice. Pretty photo, too.

There are a lot of mushrooms around my place at the moment, but they're all either poisonous and/or not recommended for eating. Well... there are hundreds of brown boletus mushrooms around which may be edible Slippery Jacks, but they have disgustingly slimy tops and are riddled with worms.

The ones on the left are the fairy ring chamignons, the fat ones on the right are possibly The Prince, not sure really but they are now on the safe list.

Spotted some good sized white mushrooms in the local mini playpark. Guaranteed no one will pick them, so i'm going to let some of them get full sized before i have the lot.

I'm now convinced that fungi is like seafood, if you don't eat it fresh as a daisy then avoid.

Definitely needs to be fresh, but do be careful with white mushrooms. I spotted a perfect white Death Angel a couple weeks ago, and its companion nearby looked exactly like a nice white edible puffball. Except it wasn't.

There are inflatable costumes, which look like 2 creatures. I like the style, but can't find the right example for me...

here is an example, though not a very good one.

Slugs had got to them.

I've yet to find anything poisonous but the search continues.

Just be careful. If Agatha Christie and Miss Marple have taught us nothing else, it is that England is awash in tricky looking mushrooms that poison unsuspecting villagers.

Bor's boring botany:

update late October post several frosts plants continuing to flower:

Yellow Hawkweed - lots of it. These will flower well into December, until the ground freezes solid.
Healall - these purple-flowered lawn herbs flower continually from spring to November
red clover - much reduced but clumps are still producing small numbers of flowers
eyebright - I have tons of this growing in every sunny open area. The interesting (to me) thing is that this year, for the first time, mauve and purple flowers have been showing up among the all white ones that have been here for at least 25 years.
asters - low growing purple flowering plants are still abundant in the lawn, which I stopped cutting late august. Still a few small calico asters also
The little branched centaury it took me so long to identify are still blooming around the mailbox, but the flowers no longer open because there aren't enough hours of full sun in the day.

This rare variety started blooming on my kitchen table. It seems I'll have to let it run its course, and eat elsewhere until the bloom has finished.

I don't know the genus or species, but it's perennial (approximately)
