Yeah Homer's outdoor girlfriend is causing problems.

She brings things to the back porch to play with and kill. Mostly insects and snakes, or rats and mice. She did get baby birds out of a nest though.

And I don't feed the birds outside anymore because of her.

Makes sense. If you feed them inside they're easier for the (presumably by now many) cats to catch.

Just in time for the Canadian election: Cryodrakon boreas:

It is estimated the number of numbats in Dryandra has now increased to about 400.

They are also being supplemented by a breeding program at Perth Zoo, with numbats released back into Dryandra fitted with radio collars to help scientists monitor their survival.

"You could call it a population explosion, which is a really good thing," Mr Lacey said.

"Normally you hear about population explosions in a bad way, but for us it is something we are really happy about. Really proud of.

"Now we only get the occasional cat that comes in, and most of those are detected around the outside edge of the reserve."

Woylies, which breed year-round, are also booming, with about 8,000 of the animals now believed to be living in the woodland.

Tetrapod Zoology wrote an article in 2007 about the apparent increase in the size of some Australian feral cats:

https://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoo...eral-mega-cats

Worth a read. Feral cats elsewhere (e.g., North America) are far less likely to reach such large sizes, even the 8kg. of the pictured corpse. In fact they are usually skinny little underfed buggers weighing considerably less than my 5.5 kg. slightly overweight and over-fed Tommy.

ETA: We have winter.

That blog is a decidedly unconvincing farrago of hearsay.

OTOH given the number of large herbivores now at large in our environment, including goats, pigs, deer, camels, water buffalo, and yes, kangaroos, I expect at least leopard-sized cats to evolve after the Apocalypse...

However, in 2014 we found a creek dotted with the bodies of cane toads that had clearly been attacked. Every morning we discovered up to five new dead toads with small, near-identical incisions down their chest in just a five-metre stretch of creek. What was using almost surgical precision to attack these toads?

Post-mortem analysis showed that in larger toads the heart and liver had been removed, and the gall bladder (which contains toxic bile salts) neatly moved outside the chest cavity. In medium-sized toads, besides the removal of the heart and liver, one or both back legs had been stripped of their toxic skin and the muscle also eaten.

The finding intrigued us enough to dissect waterlogged and rotting toad bodies in 40℃ heat. Using remote infrared camera footage and analysis of the bites left on the muscle, we found our clever attacker – the native water rat!

Where are the shearwaters? https://abc.net.au/news/2019-10-05/m...chers/11572220

Quote:
Each year, hundreds of thousands of short-tailed shearwaters descend on Victoria's coastline to breed following a mammoth journey which takes two months to complete.

The birds spend the northern summer around Alaska, before travelling 15,000 kilometres to Australia where they arrive with precision.

For the past 30 years, the south-west Victorian population has arrived at Griffiths Island, near Port Fairy, a day either side of September 22.

But this year, the date came and went without the usual flurry of activity.

better late than never https://www.penguins.org.au/news/lat...w-news-page-33

I'm assuming that if they've made it as far as Phillip Island they'll be reaching Port Fairy as well; after 15,000 Km across the Pacific Ocean a few hundred kilometres is neither here nor there (PI is east of N?yfb and PF is west)

"in good health" - best part. It means they haven't been denied adequate feeding grounds before travelling.
