I am in Omaha, Nebraska, otherwise known as Flyover Country. The worst of the flooding was nowhere near my house, so we were safe from that. It seems like Spring just got lost on the way to us though.

Had to cross this to get to my ice road run. First world problems, I guess.

This is a very early thaw, and I should be getting a couple more weeks of hard cold, instead of this slushy nonsense.

Maybe it's time to move further north. Maybe there IS something to the old saying, 'the souther, the stupider'...

Alternating bits of running in the light snow covering, or the polished, wet surface (as form drill)

Damn I love spring.

It was awesome! I did have to take a light day today though. 6.5km at recovery pace. A bit chilly on the way out, but really great podcast and I was warm for the second half.

it happened everywhere... Facebook feed shows that everyone in Ontario and Alberta got snow. In Quebec, we got a bit of snow, and freezing rain.

I'm just waiting until it becomes at least 5+ degrees here, continuously.

It's called 'Making Sense', by Sam Harris. He is interviewing Roger MacNamee about his book, 'Zucked'.

Dark, but informative.

Dark (to me) because it baldly describes some of google's deliberate harvesting of data, some of facebooks stuff. It's an interesting world. That 'Pocahontas' politician was mentioned...the guy (the author) said she described the data companies (facebook, amazon, google...) as in the same position as the banks were during the big anti-trust thingammie a few decades ago.

She sounded smart, when he put it that way. It is a complex issue, and kind of grew up around us.

I'm depressed. it happens every year. Sometimes even in May. In my memory, once, in June.

I still find it depressing. I blame all those centuries of ancestral evolving in a climate in which April was indeed 'Spring', a thing which is a sadistic lie in Nova Scotia. We are instinctively primed for the weather to warm and the precipitation to quit being of the solid variety.

Plus the cat always blames me for the horrible weather and will sulk and get into trouble deliberately in revenge.

As I ran across a small, frozen lake today, I thought of how cute it is when you southerners complain about your 'cold winters'.

I find it invigorating. It's all that propaganda they pumped into us in Canadian schools in the 70's and 80's. Service, Frost and Plant all made it seem un-robertlike to want the warm, gentle embrace of southern climates.

I ran outside every day this winter, in my sub-arctic area. We had uncommonly cold weather in the beginning of the winter. The majority of my runs were at or below -30C

I've never been colder, than a memorable short stroll, on Mavillette Beach, at -11C in February (2011? 2009?)

The east coast is brutish, grey and forbidding. And that's during the warm, summer days.

it's not been a good day here. Ice, from out of nowhere. Slipped down those stairs today, finally.

I remember you writing somewhere that March/April were ugly months. They really are. It should be spring.

same here. It's chilling to the bone.. even just being outside for a bit long.

I tried to go for a walk at the mount the other day... the wind was so bad, that my upper legs became itchy? I was only wearing pajama bottoms though.. so that was a bit dumb. Stopped at the St Joseph Oratory Church here, and my legs were so bad that they were all inflamed.

Was a nice random visit to the Church though, and I got to light a few candles, and listen to someone sing during a service.

I think that's the beginnings of frostbite. Be careful with yourself, woman!

When I was young and dumb, I walked a long way home after a party in an April sleet storm wearing a thin pair of jeans. When I got home, the jeans were plastered to my thighs with a layer of ice. The skin there turned red, itched like crazy for days, and finally peeled. That was over 45 years ago and the fronts of my thighs still get cold before the rest of my body.

maybe it was.. I don't know! But it took a lot to just resist itching them like crazy. When I saw how inflamed my thighs were, I just thought it best to ignore it.

I don't think it was nearly as bad, as what you experienced.

But walking on the mount that day, was definitely not the greatest decision. The pathways were pure ice, and I nearly slipped on my ass at least 10 times or so. I saw some other moron, ahead of me, that was walking the path as well... 100 meters ahead of me or so. And saw him nearly slip several times as well.

Just some idiots, we were, walking about, thinking that it was already Spring time. But, nope. Give it another month or so, I guess. And I'll try again.

With my daily (except one) outdoor runs since Dec. 20, I've enjoyed temperatures well below -30C, and I do mean enjoyed. It was awesome, though in heavier clothing, so a slower kind of awesome.

Anyway, I find it MUCH colder this last couple weeks, with the temperature above -10C. It may have something to do with how moist it is at the extreme low temperatures. It isn't nearly as 'chilly' going into winter, than it is coming out.

I ran at about 0 today, and after I had my hat and mitts off (about half hour in) I ran into a windy stretch and put it back on. Hurried, too.

Frostbite is tough, but I got sternly lectured about it being MY fucking fault if I got it. That harsh admonishment stayed with me, and I fucked it up anyway. Burnt my toes last winter.

Because I didn't go get help (warm up in a store or such) when I needed it. So don't FUCK it up.

Good on you for making a stop when you needed to, and DOUBLE good on you for recounting it, so you can more firmly remember this, in the far future when you are running around a sub-arctic town for fun.

I keep forgetting to recruit the kids to help.

I have an 18-year-old son who really, in principle, ought to be doing some of the digging. Maybe it would do him some good. He's skinny as a broomstick, hardly any muscle on him.

You're allowed to enjoy it though. I don't mind shovelling the deck off if the snow isn't wet and heavy.

Shovelling snow is rewarding, I think, because it is i difficult physical task, which, when finished, shows a real tangible effort. It shows that real work was done.

Plus, in a few minutes, weather (or a passing snowplough) can undo hours of labour.

The mix of tangible and transient is somehow a very satisfying mix. I guess it had better be
