Who would buy a house which needs a sales rider like that on it? Kind of like a rider in a cliff erosion zone to the effect that "This home has NEVER fallen into the ocean".

Can you overlay rough 50 and 100 year flood zones?

We get the same thing here all the time with developers being allowed to build on known flood plains like the Somerset Levels near me. I mean it would be ok if they went full Dutch on it with dredging and dykes and weirs and proper flood defences but they don't want to spend the money on that and just go ahead anyway. Fucking crazy but some people are clearly making stacks of cash out of it.

Good thing the government is there to prevent ... ohh, right, no, the government is there to get fat cash for their elite pals.

Who was it that built those roads? Was that government?

There's a key in the top left. All of that blue, like half the map (I don't know what shade to call it) is 100-year.

And how much did the floodplain change due to impervious (jerome's old TR rain tax argument) coverage?

Which roads? What government? It was private land that was developed 70 or 80 years ago. Originally the land was not even within the city limits. Libertarianism Caveat Emptor, suckers!!!!

That's a good question and it comes up often in discussion about development in Houston. When it was all prairie, anyone could pave over their small development and expect rain to easily drain off into the surrounding prairie. But as the surrounding area also got developed drainage became a real issue. 50 or 60 years ago they probably didn't do shit, now I'm pretty sure new development has to take that into account.

When the floodplain follows linear roads, i think the question has been answered.

That's actually probably appropriate. I'm not sure of the difference between a river, stream or bayou, but when they flood their banks, a temporary oxbow lake can form and if the housing is inside that oxbow.... Let me see if I can find some pictures from the flooding last year. I have a friend who was trapped in his neighborhood for a week because it became an island.

I'm about 7 miles upstream (to the west). The bayou near my house is different, but it feeds into Brays. My house is not in the floodplain, but it is very close.

Might have posted this back in 2014 but speaking of flood islands

Somerset Levels and everyone else had been evacuated but local builder who'd built his dream pad wasn't going to abandon it to the waves.

My friend lives in the neighborhood of Kingdom Heights which is within this Oxbow of the Brazos River (a river is bigger than a bayou, but I don't know the formal definition).

All the land north of them was flooded during the 2015 storm. I'm not sure if the two tips of the river completely connected, but they were trapped.

As a fun factoid and iirc it was finding sand from the Chicxulub impact crater in the Brazos river basin which was one of the final smoking gun pieces of evidence supporting the impactor hypothesis for the end Cretaceous mass extinction event.

In the Houston area it definitely takes the first definition.

Right, as if anyone believes those are private roads and the government had nothing to do with the building .. I guess they are not collecting any property tax either.

I said it wasn't in the city limits when it was first developed SEVENTY FUCKING YEARS AGO. Now it is within the city and yes the city collects property taxes and maintains the roads.

And I'm sure the Army corps of Engineers did a long term evaluation of how rain would impact the community in half a century when the city's population would quadruple.
