With so few, maybe 400, maybe less than that, they may not be long for this world.
i found myself reading about them too, i started off by trying to find out where puma's fit in to the cat family tree (they're not big cats apparently, they are Felinae not Pantherinae)

while reading on wiki about Felinae i went on a Felis sylvestris tangent, then got throroghly confused by the distribution in Europe:

i mean, what's the light blue in the non mountainous areas of Europe such as England and France?

This story is about a month old, I think. A black leopard was sighted in Croydon.

A "big cat expert" confirmed that he's received numerous reports of really large black cat sightings in the area, so this one MUST be real.

Quote:
However, Mr Arnold is certain cougars, pumas, black leopards the latter more commonly known as black panthers were living in the wild in the UK.

He explained that during Victorian times wealthy people used to keep such big animals as pets, and when they escaped, they would often go undetected, and so breeding of cats, monkeys and other exotic escapees continued.

He added: "Over the past 200 years sightings of wild cats in and around Surrey have been plentiful, particularly pumas, and I do believe that some of them are real sightings, as the cats are the offspring of the offspring of cats kept as pets some time ago.
"As for lions and tigers being in the wild in the UK, this is simply not true. Lions and tigers would hunt people, and we would know about the implications if a lion started terrorising the streets of Croydon.
Mr. Arnold has a blog about big cat sightings in Kent, and has written "numerous books" about them
Quote:
He also studies folklore and has written several books, including MYSTERY ANIMALS OF THE BRITISH ISLES: KENT, HAUNTED ROCHESTER, HAUNTED MAIDSTONE, HAUNTED ASHFORD, MYSTERY ANIMALS OF THE BRITISH ISLES: LONDON and the soon-to-be-published HAUNTED CHATHAM.

Maybe a suppressed longing for a more natural world?

I know when I was starting to get homesick in Holland one of the things that set me off was walking through the dunes and noticing they were all underlaid with chicken wire to reinforce them or something. That and the little brass plaques on all the trees saying when they were planted. Claustrophobic, man.

I guess what puzzles me is what is the narrative that cryptocats support?

Alien sightings support various narratives (all p cool IMO - we're on the portal of entrance into a galactic civilization, we're going to be raped for our resources, they've been here all along and are the source of most of our mythologies and civilizations, etc.)

Nessie, etc., sightings support the narrative that this world is bigger, stranger, older, etc., than most of us can imagine, and that ancient monsters/creatures thought long extinct could still lurk in remote places

Same with bigfoot, with a dose of "we are not alone" - there are other human but non homo sapiens populations holding out in the wilderness

What is the cryptocat narrative? That the UK is not as tamed and tended as one would think?
