Pretty much the same in Houston. I have to mow the fucking lawn this weekend. Wife had some pretty bad allergies yesterday. It's been a pleasant winter (and I was working outside quite a bit), but I'm really not looking forward to summer.

It's now below freezing again and there's apparently a big snow storm coming in so I left the house to get beer.

But I think it's back over freezing again in a day or two so all this snow we're supposed to get is probably going to melt right away.

I expect to be running across the lake for another month, before they close the road. After that, it will still be 2 or 3 until the ice stops blowing around bashing the hell out of things.

It's global warming, just like Asimov predicted...

Why aren't you also selling bags of pellets and compressed sawdust logs? Probably cheaper and even more demand. Lighter weight, take up less space, too.

Have tried them in the past but they don't sell as well. Plus they are really messy.

Yeah, we had some ducks once. Wound up giving them to the zoo.

The other ducks were mean to them, 'cause they were raised by humans.

A pal just started operating a lodge in the Yukon (we stayed with them when I did the Klondike Road Relay) and he loves compressed sawdust blocks for heating. I don't know how much maintenance it adds (seems to me the material clinging to the inside of the chimney would be more of a problem)

Have you tried them for a season?

Compressed sawdust logs? Tried them for a couple months one late spring when we ran out of wood early. There are several kinds. We settled on rectangular pure compressed sawdust, no glues/starches etc to make them stick together. Buy 'em by the pallet load.

Pros: light weight, burn well, reasonably long burn time, break easily into 'kindling' bits
Cons: cost more than dry firewood, the slightest bit of humidity causes them to become fragile, a lot of humidity causes them to crumble right back to being sawdust.

So for us - cost too much, need very dry storage. But very convenient.

ETA: material clinging inside chimney? Do you mean creosote? Because no, dry compressed sawdust will not create creosote, or at least not unless you have no idea how to fire up a woodstove. The sawdust itself does not fly around, so that ain't getting up yer chimney either.

As dry as it is here, it might not be an issue.

Creosote is what I was worried about. It's been decades, but remembering what chimney fires can do would make me more manic about maintenance. I would probably do a refresher on all the upkeep before starting down that path again. Funny thing is, I BUILT a stove a few years ago. Buddy used it in his fish camp, to keep water warm for the staff (and cook lunch). Never even loaded it myself lol.

Ask me if you go that route. If there's one thing I am good at, it's heating a house with wood without mucking up the chimney. We've had this stove since 1994. We check the chimney yearly, run a brush down it. There's never been more than a bit of light ash.

I will. I already told my sweetheart that if we get a woodstove in here, the chimney brush has to come first (along with the other tools/maintenance)

Mostly, I just need to make a maintenance schedule and look regularly. The big concern is that I am the only one in the house with wood-burning experience, so would feel pretty responsible at first.

Doing this was frowned upon by the elders around my youth. They suggested that the added heat from burning paper would be too hot, and start a chimney fire. For me, I would prefer a chimney which could take the fire, but back in the day, building codes were a bit different.

Do you find that they burn all the way through? Do you have to poke at it a lot?

Waste here is hilarious. I could get all the wood and steel I want - free - at the dump.

depends on how tight its bound
we would do them very dense, what ashes flew off were small

no poking necessary, it would burn itslef through
when done just pick out the wire and clean up the ash pile

Start with a good Selkirk chimney. Besides the annual cleaning, the tools you need are just a poker, ash shovel, ash bucket and hearth brush.

If you're burning dry hardwood, or even softwood slabs from a mill waste pile, you shouldn't have a creosote problem. Creosote happens if you burn green/wet wood not hot enough.
