Natural Resources South Australia Murray Darling Basin (SAMDB) project officer Luke Ireland said Mallee emu-wrens were tiny birds, weighing as little as a 10c coin, with distinctive tail feathers that are similar to the ‘fish-bone’ structure of emu feathers.

“These charismatic birds seldom fly far, and are heavily reliant on spinifex, a spiky, dense tussock grass, for shelter and breeding,” he said.

“Reintroductions are a long and challenging process and there are a lot of steps before actually moving birds around.”

The first reintroduction of birds was completed in April 2018 after funding and support was secured from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program (Threatened Species Recovery Fund) and project partners Zoos SA, Zoos Victoria, Rotary International, the Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, BirdLife Australia, Parks Victoria, La Trobe University, Monash University and Natural Resources SAMDB.

Conservation Manager Zoos SA Dr Liberty Olds said more than 1500 hours were spent in the field capturing family groups, transferring the birds from the Victorian sites to Ngarkat Conservation Park in SA, and then undertaking post-release monitoring.

Do you folks not have nicknames for your different coins?

Here, if someone were talking about a critter that weighed as little as one of our 10c coins, a writer would be (I think) more likely to say something like "weighing as little as a dime".

Nitpick: It's not really a nickname if it has the word printed right on it.

The Canadian Loonie and Toonie are nicknames. But in the US dime is the (or at least one) official name for the coin.

Interesting. "Dime" appears to be just a North American thing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten-cent_coin

Quote:
A ten-cent coin or ten-cent piece is a coin minted for various decimal currencies worth 10 cents.

Examples include:

the United States ten-cent coin, better known as the US dime
the Canadian ten-cent coin, better known as the Canadian dime
the Australian ten-cent coin
the New Zealand ten-cent coin
the Hong Kong ten-cent coin
the Singapore ten-cent coin
the Brunei ten-cent coin
the dubbeltje, ten-cent coin of the decimal Dutch guilder (Netherlands)
the 10 cent euro coin used in several European countries known as the eurozone
the Namibian ten-cent coin
the ten-cent coin of the South African rand

Nitpick: It's not really a nickname if it has the word printed right on it.
One-up nitpick: Coins don't typically have an inscription giving a name for that type of coin. Rather, they typically have an inscription indicating the amount of currency represented by the coin. (Compare your dime to all your other coins!)

So (assuming consistency) the point of the "one dime" inscription on the US dime must be that "one dime" (in official US usage) is synonymous with "10 cents". So if someone hands you two 5-cent coins, they have literally given you one dime, in the sense of the amount, even though they haven't given you one "dime", in the sense of the type of coin.

So there are two different meanings of the word, in the US at least: A type of coin, and a unit of currency. A "dime" is a coin that is worth exactly one dime.

In Canada, the word "dime" is never used as a unit of currency; it's used only as a (nick?)name for the 10 cent coin.

i'm just saying that for folk in the USA and Canadia "penny" is a nickname, while in the lands of Britain they actually exist, like leprechauns.

Pretty sure your nickels say "5 cents" (just like ours do).

Our quarters say "25 cents".

Two nickels do not make "one dime", idiot.
There is an object in our universe with the words "one dime" on it.
That object I'm meaning is the U.S. dime, which is worth 10 cents.
Ten U.S. pennies are both worth 10 cents and are NOT "one dime" nor "a dime".
Two U.S. nickels are both worth 10 cents and are NOT "one dime" nor "a dime".
A two fifths mangled portion of a U.S. quarter is worth nothing.

The Coinage Act of 1792 (section 20 in particular) disagrees with you.

But I'll concede that the unit-of-currency meaning of "dime" is somewhat archaic and has apparently fallen out of use.

Etymology of dime
Posted by Johannes on 30 August 2011
The word dime (coin worth one tenth of a US dollar, a 10 cent coin) comes from the old French disme (a tenth part), from the Latin decima [tenth (part)], from decem (ten), from the Greek deca (ten).
