What's the basis of the claim that Norton Anti-virus doesn't protect against bots? The separate Norton AntiBot software was discontinued years ago.

This was my experience with Norton when I did tech support. I am now retired.

But ya know, once you get a bad taste for something, it's hard to forgive = p

the Norton plug-in sometimes gives me grief with Outlook, and sometimes Windows complains about Norton slowing down start-up, especially on Outlook, but otherwise it does the job. it's certainly played a part in stopping me getting infections.

there's also a Norton Power Eraser tool that is a pretty savage way to remove malware, such as I've twice picked up on airport free wifi (detected by Norton).

when I bought my Windows 7 HP laptop in 2011 my CW recommended Norton whereas previously he was against it. I reinstalled it when I got my new Lenovo (W10) this year when the free McAfee pre-load ran out. no way am I subscribing to it.

English can be the shits. I surely couldn't follow this in a face-to-face dialogue either.

"reinstalled it", implying you own(ed) a copy, which afaik was not free.

"no way am I subscribing to it", meaning either you don't own the copy or you won't re-subsribe (pay anew) for it.

Oh well.

English, ... I do pay for a subscription for Norton. I did reinstall it, on my new laptop. I won't pay for a subscription to McAfee.

that's what i use. though, let me check... yea no, it's not up to date.

it's there i guess. i don't really see much point to be honest. i have every single thing disabled in my startup at the moment as well.
(windows key + R - type msconfig, click on start up - task manager - then disable each)

but i am dealing with an old laptop with 4GB of RAM so i want every little bit i can get.

but i really don't see much point of an anti virus? my internet usage mainly involves going to the same sites as always. and then playing league of legends, hence why i need the memory.

i used to use ubuntu for a bit, which was amazing. it was not a memory hog at all, everything was super quick and there were no problems at all.

but, there are a lot of applications you can't use with it.

i think that when you install applications, you should always go into the 'custom installation' part (instead of express or recommended), so that you can unclick all the unnecessary stuff that gets installed with your main installation.

pretty much as long as you do that, then you don't have to worry about crap getting onto the computer.

Nah applications too. A lot of audio shit doesn't work on Linux, hence why I still use Windows.

Yeah tried explaining that to the ex now in prison and he still put ubuntu on the backup computer and was trying to put it back on Windows which was why it was in his office not mine so I lost it along with my dad's computer Michael was using and our external hard drive to the police for evidence.

Custodial sentence seems a bit harsh for installing ubuntu on a pc tbh.

Trying to get my 10yo to learn Java. I think paying a Uni student to teach him would be good. The online Finnish uni course moves at a very brisk pace and is pretty dry. I think the dryness is just how it is until he gets all the basics down but the brisk pace sucks for me.

Is this a good thread for this? After all, Norton sucks donkey dicks...

If you want to learn Java, just use the Oracle site, apparently their lessons on their are very comprehensive.

& it's free I think

A nice young hot geek uni student tutoring you and your son in Java...

I can totally see that ; )

You might actually need two. One to keep your son busy ...

Yay, I indirectly circumvented one of Chrome's very nasty blacklist functionalities.

I had inadvertently deleted the slither.io thumbnail from the 8 most visited sites presented on/by Chrome's default New Tab. Doing so banished slither.io to its blacklist.

After hours of searching, found a post claiming that installing/uninstalling a replacement "new tab" extension would make Chrome's default New Tab forget its blacklist, which it did.

Ahhhhhh.
