Art Deco

I love the aesthetic and the inspirations of Art Deco. Art, architecture, decor, textiles, you name it. I love it.

When I started setting up my 2020 bullet journal last month, I wanted to remember the 1920s. It was a decade that began with frenetic optimism and ended with a crash. I hope this century's 20s follow a different trajectory.

And then, when I decided to revamp my blog, I want go with an Art Deco aesthetic, as well.

There's an antique store about 20 miles from where I live that specializes in Art Deco furniture and textiles, along with a bit of Nouveau. It's one of my favorite places to browse and daydream. It was at this shop that I became fascinated with some of the tiniest examples of Art Deco.

Before ear piercing became a rite of passage for young girls, most earrings (and all the earrings in my mother's and grandmothers' collections) had vise-like screw fasteners. You screwed the little clamp in place on your earlobe and hoped for the best that it wouldn't come loose without your noticing. Screw it even a quarter-turn too tight, and within the hour the pressure and blood constriction would make your earlobe feel like a toothache. Oh the sacrifices one had to make for fashion.

A lot of fancy vintage earrings have been modified with posts or hooks. And earring styles changed when long dangles didn't require turning the clamp style fastener into a medieval torture device.

Clip-ons were also a thing, and still show up at jewelry counters for pierce-less earring lovers.

Necklaces gave the artist and the art connoisseur a bigger canvas to work with and appreciate.

Art Deco Egyptian Revival!

I bought this ring for Sunflower at an estate sale a few years ago. I am not sure if it classifies as an Art Deco piece though.

it's a gorgeous ring! the side view definitely has an art deco feel to it.

I have a ring that's about half that height and it catches on everything. the main stone is marquise cut. maybe the pointy ends make it snaggy.

It is hard to see in the picture, but each one of the rubies has its own stem, giving it the look of a bouquet of smaller flowers surrounding the larger, center stone.

The guy who ran the estate sale thought it was just a high quality costume piece. He was wrong. He now has a certified jewelry appraiser consulting on his high end sales.

I'm not sure if this is art-deco or not. I just finished a few days of obsessive sewing, and wanted to share.

Hidden inside are another pair of mitts, which are cut from sheared beaver and fox, from the same patters.

They should be warm enough.

I expect to test that tonight.

Since the seal hair runs in a direction, it is kind of limiting as to what shapes I can work with. This first attempt is straight lines to keep things simple. Later, I hope to learn more of the fancy shit. Some of those who came before me are scary good. They take dark and light shades of hide, stitch them together and make images.

I'm not there yet, just looking there...

Art Deco lamps!

Geometric shapes define the style of Tiffany lamps that fall solidly into an Art Deco aesthetic. But many Tiffany bases seem somewhat constrained compared to

The latter lamp blurs the line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco (IMO). Compare the draping of the two images, and the organic shape of the latter lampshade.

Beaded and fringed lampshades were and are also a popular Art Deco motif, borrowing from both Victorian and Art Nouveau arts and crafts.
