So my German Shepherd is deaf and going blind (cataracts). I've kinda known she was deaf (or going deaf or perhaps selectively deaf) for a while now but my wife noticed the eyes today and took her to the vet where they confirmed both issues. We think she (the dog) is about 11 years old.

Sounds a bit young for that though. How much is canine cataract surgery?

More than we can afford given our current employment situations. Google says $1500-$5000 per eye. Our vet didn't recommend it or refer us. I'll look into canine ophthalmologists. Google also says there are non-surgical treatments.

Oh yeah, she has arthritis too and she's lost about 10 pounds since her last annual.

Google says GSD life expectancy is 9-13 years. The AKC says 7-10. She's not a purebred, but either way 11 is getting up there in age.

Our dog, not a GS but comparable size (Newf X GSD/Border Collie/Long hair Collie/Godknowswhatelse generic farm dog) lived to be twelve, put down because cancer. She had bad arthritis starting at 7. There is good meds for that, made her able to run around and live like a normal active dog until literally the day before I had to have her euthanised. Called Meloxicam among several other generic names. Was about 75 dollars a month and well worth it imo. Also some steroids she was getting for severe skin allergies.

Word of advice if you have an older dog - check their 'arm pits' and groin regularly for lumps. I did not know to do that and it is faintly possible that diagnosing her sarcoma earlier through finding such swellings might have extended her life.

Ah, I guess my dogs just lived long lives. That arthritis is nasty. It affects their ability to use the bathroom. Bore is right, medicate her. Back in the day we gave dogs baby aspirin for arthritis because that was all they had. I can't remember what we had Crystal and Molly on for theirs, but it worked. As for being blind and deaf, Suzy went blind from glaucoma but that didn't slow her down, and I briefly took care of a deaf Dalmatian that was a challenge, but fun. She could feel me stamp on the floor, so I used that to get her attention.

BTW PH, send us some fucking rain. Damn Houston gonna hog it all and flood! Be safe : )

People sometimes use the email list for other things.

Recently, there was a big kerfuffle because the discussion got political. And that's not what the group is about. And some very different political perspectives are represented by the people in the group.

Starting the political stuff was unnecessary and arguably inappropriate in the first place. But then some other people responded inappropriately to that. It escalated until someone quit the group in a huff. (And said some really childish shit in her parting shot.)

I won't say which people were which, politically, because it doesn't fucking matter. Neither "side" (politically speaking) was completely innocent here.

(part two)

Someone in the group just posted something about a pharmaceutical mishap. She has acid reflux. Her pharmacist gave her the wrong stuff -- some psychiatric meds. It wasn't working, so she tried doubling and then tripling the dose.

She says that she was getting all anxious and paranoid, and couldn't sleep for three days, before she figured out what had happened.

She didn't make any explicit connection between this mishap and the kerfuffle of part one, but it fits the timing. And that's what everyone else will be thinking. Because this person is the one who initiated the political rants.

(part three)

lol. just lol.
So in other words, she was trying to justify why she went on rants. Seems fair. She was trying to justify her behaviour.. in a roundabout way. This points to her feeling ashamed of her previous actions. Which in turn, means, that since she has acknowledged that.. others should also let it go.

If someone does something questionable, and doesnt acknowledge it.. it's up to others to show them why it was questionable or wrong. But if that same person DOES acknowledge their own faults... then there is no use in others to continue in berating them. They already know where they went wrong.

First run movie theaters re-opened this week with lukewarm offerings.

I wonder who - movie theaters or distributors - has the upper hand these days
as to offering good to better than good movies? Are they showing the crappiest,
yet barely passable/ok movies first because the public is slow to respond in week 1?

Saw Tenet, a time-travel movie. IT SUCKS IN CAPITAL LETTERS.
Understandably though, time-travel and time-travel-ish plots are top-ten
difficult to portray without losing the audience. Edge of Tomorrow was fantastic.

On the plus side, my fav theater is also showing two Chad Boseman movies
(from 2014 and 2019) in tribute to him.

My brother saw it and recommended I watch the final 15 mins and then watch the movie from the start. Would that make the movie more enjoyable, do you think?

Maybe. Solid A for special effects. B- for story and characters - my opinions.

Also maybe, cuz it's a UK production. Speaking of which, it seemed to me
that the UK and Aussie actors, the majority, spoke in American-ized accents,
whilst Robert Patterson (American?) spoke in a UK-ish accent.

Also, I'm old (i.e. less and less sharp), and most of the time-hopping was an
irritant. Many time hops and scene changes were less than 2 minutes duration.

ETA: Perhaps reading a movie review (with spoilers) would best prepare one
for all the plot twists and hops.

She's up and walking right now, but earlier she was just using her front legs and dragging her butt/rear legs. Picking up a script from the vet tomorrow.

She'll be like a young dog once she's on the medication, if arthritis is the main problem. Ours was literally crying from pain the day before we took her to the vet. I felt so bad.

It did shrink down (at least on this computer). Not the greatest picture. Hard to do selfies with a dog in the frame.

The fixture is fine. I'm embarrased about the shitty KLH speaker and over-the-wall wire conduit.

I'm sure it is.

The one currently above my head has a missing glass cover, since it smashed a few years ago.

Those fixtures are very common at stores like Canadian Tire, Home Hardware etc., they are cheap. I have a pair in my kitchen since about 15 years ago. Never fell down. I do bang one of them with a cupboard door pretty often, stupid low ceilings. Never broke it.

We're replacing them soon with the flushmount LED fixtures - better light and less conspicuous with the low ceiling. We have 4 of the flushmounts in other rooms, they're great.

ETA: the fixture that scared me was the stupid fan light that wobbled and vibrated if you turned it on. Was here when we moved in, finally threw it out a couple years ago. Do not miss.
