Question for non-australians only.

Have you ever heard about an australian dying painfully after getting bit and/or stang off of the wildlife and thought anything much different to 'oh well, they don't have to live there'?

For Australians.
We have constant calls to cull sharks and crocs, and I think for fuck sake, you don't have to swim, surf, fish or whatever the fuck else there.

We spend millions of dollars on shark nets a year.

Nets
Nets do not prevent sharks from entering a particular area. They are, however, intended to catch 'resident sharks' and sharks that move through an area while feeding on bait fish.

The Shark Control Program (SCP) large mesh nets are specifically designed to catch sharks over 2 m in length. The SCP aims to reduce the number of potentially dangerous sharks in particular areas rather than create an impenetrable barrier against shark attack.

Nets are manufactured to Fisheries Queensland specifications and are 186 m long. Most nets have a depth of 6 m and a mesh size of 500 mm.

View a diagram showing how the nets are used (PDF, 2.0MB).

The nets are set adjacent to the shoreline according to the prevailing tides and currents. Their distance from shore is determined by topographical features of the area and sea conditions. Equipment is usually placed far enough offshore to prevent human and shark interaction.

Surely there's like about an acre and a half in California where it's safe to live and doesn't cost like 2 billion dollars?

Probably not both at once.

Whole world's like that. The more like paradise a place is, the more snakes are hanging out in the trees - sometimes disguised as sharks, crocs, bears, mean jellyfish, poisonous octopuses...

Now where I live, it's cruel weather. It's utterly definitely paradisiacal here from june through October, there are no dangerous stingy bitey killu things, but the dark cold wet winters and springs. people die just thinking of facing another February.

Sure, there's plenty of desert once you go 100 miles east of the coast.

Very affordable property here.

We're getting snow for the second time this winter. Lows in the low 20s tonight. Very abnormal winter for Houston.

Schools closed today and tomorrow, bridges icing over. The whole city is essentially shut down.
