I snuck into the house, kilt the owner, drug his corpse to the lake where I sunk it with stones, then I dove in for a swim.

Let's make English great again!

does anyone else say 'eat' for the past tense of 'eat' ?

it works the same way as 'read' does for the past tense of 'read', i.e. 'ett'

lol it's not a trap, i was in my 30s before it occurred to me that i only said 'ate' when i was trying to be posh.

one of the shyer posters has contacted me via comment to suggest that it might be a northern thing and i can imagine these older forms would have clung on in east anglia too

I think 'drug' as a substitute for 'dragged' is mostly used in a comic sense, or it was where I grew up.

Otoh, there was some cross contamination from Florida relatives that may have influenced my family, which, tbh, included most of the people 'where I grew up' within about 10 sq. km.

I have never heard anyone say 'ett'. We like our aaaaas here, we all say 'ate'.

Also 'ant' (aunt) is close to universal in the Maritimes, turns to 'awnt' in Ontario.

Strictly on the island... it took years of listening to mainlanders before I could even hear the difference between 'melk' and 'milk', and between 'wun't' and 'won't'.

It's not regional or class based, 'ett' is the more common form in the UK and is used throughout the country by people from all backgrounds. If anything I would say that most people only use the 'eit' pronunciation when they want to emphasise the word.
I ett a pie - the pie is the main focus
I eit a pie - the fact that I ate it is the main focus

It is used in Boston too, I had a great aunt who came from Boston who insisted on it. She would say I am not a tiny crawling insect, I am an aunt (awnt).

Depends on the tense. Both are correct in different senses.

"I drug it over yonder"

"I dragged it over yonder"

You can clearly see that Drug is correct!

The question is where did the verb come from? If we stealed it from Germanic languages then we should recognize the Germanic difference between weak and strong verbs and quit trying to make all the verbs pussies.

In the Germanic languages, a strong verb is a verb that marks its past tense by means of changes to the stem vowel (ablaut). The majority of the remaining verbs form the past tense by means of a dental suffix (e.g. -ed in English), and are known as weak verbs.

It depends on the speaker's dialect, claiming anything else just makes you sound pompous. In many dialects they sound exactly the same, in others they sound different.
