Hilariously your ascii cock looks better in quotes.

You're interested because you're a photographer, you make things to look at too.

Oooo. High-end pastels ARE sexy. I ought to go find mine right now...
Sexy is the right term. hardly anyone ever manages to turn out really good work with them but my god they are lovely pure things and you want to just fingerpaint the hell outta your paper. Then there are the toothsome high end papers made to support pastels...
Once, I went to a figure drawing session with very expensive, cream colored pastels and top-quality paper for pastels. The model was a very attractive, full-figured woman who made the best poses for showing off her curves.

It was an experience. And it was a good thing I was sitting down for that session. Made some excellent drawings that day, but they all got destroyed by a leak in the house I was in...

Figure drawing classes... long time since I attended one. Sounds like you.. er... enjoyed the experience.

There's the thing about pastels. So fragile. Almost need to be thought of as ephemeral, works best experienced by the creator or an observer while they are being created. Even if you manage to preserve them they have to be behind glass which obscures their brilliance, they may have had to be sprayed with fixatives which no matter how good change the texture and colour, and still if you do nothing or everything over years the slow silent rain of tiny particles of pigments gathers below the painting.

But there is no more intimate experience with pure pigments.

And yes, there are plenty of directed exercises. I have taught people to draw competently, and to paint, and to just loosen up so they can have some fun with colour and pattern.

And re the last...

The most fun evening art class I ever ran was a simple printing on fabric class for adults. Night one we made potato cut prints on cotton. Class had a ball, because no pressure, who cares what your potato prints look like? Night two we looked at the idea of pattern, used our somewhat dried potato cuts, halved oranges, carrot rounds, found objects, to print stripes, lines, circles, squares, diagonals and so on. Night three we got onto colour, because it is surprising how many people do not understand or were never taught primaries, secondaries, complementaries and how they work and what you can do with them. So I had them overlaying colours and considering the results.

Night four was getting into seriousness, linocuts. Decide what you want for your repeat pattern. Keep it simple. Don't worry too much about execution, it will end up looking pretty, I promise. Showed them how to use the tools, supervised the process.

Skip to Night eight! Printing in patterns on silk with linocut designs and fabric ink! Fabulous colourful eye-catching results! Ten grownup people amazed at themselves, all happy and feeling confident and pleased with the end product. That they made!

So satisfying.

I can't draw either. Nor can I write in any kind of legible form. A graphologist once looked at my 'handwriting' and his only comment was "Oooh you poor thing!" Think there's something wrong with the input/output circuitry. Anyway, the discovery of keyboards and a Mavis Beacon typing tutor on floppy disc was one of my more liberating life experiences. That and AutocadTM.

lol @ ooh you poor thing. My brother's is real bad like that, he definitely missed his calling to be a doctor. Even watching him write makes me tense up at the shape his hand makes, like it's arthritic or something.

Yeah, after being suspected of involvement with drugs for half a century, that's got to get to anyone. Especially a paranoid stoner.

For you, a complete 'that'.

I looked after hundreds and hundreds of children over many years. Part of that time was the early years of drugging kids who were 'having trouble in school', which meant anything from 'talks in class' to 'can't sit still' to 'acts like a Tasmanian Devil all day'.

Some of those kids legitimately benefitted from Ritalin or the variety of other medications that got tried in the 80s.

But the diagnosis end of things was horrible. General Practitioners could prescribe with no more evidence of a child having ADD/ADHD than a teacher or parent's say-so.

Watching happy lively exuberant kids turn into veritable grey zombies in a matter of weeks after starting school was heartbreaking. For a few years until the whole thing got better and more controlled, I cried every fall when the next group of little five year olds headed out all smiles their first day of school with their new schoolbags and pencils and crayons.

That cartoon embodies that entire experience in a few little pictures.
