So do I, tbh. I know that ice as thick as my arm is long is going to hold me, still makes me nervous, especially near the shores.

Also the overnight low last night was 21C, the hottest April night in Nøyfb since 1856.

Note that this is almost the end of April, and we are approaching winter.

I live in a beautiful, sub-arctic region. I don't know which areas are horrible, but have been all over NT and haven't found it.

The shores are the most dangerous areas. I have never seen melt or overflow mid-lake (though rivers are another creature, of course)

Last night, I got lost running a trail, and ended up following rotting sled tracks through some sketchy melt areas. It's funny how much things have changed for me.

I used to be so fearful that I seldom did recreational stuff on the ice. I would have a miserable time. That seems to have evaporated this year. I don't know if it relates to the weight loss, the new and much more able body, or something else, but it is significant.

Spoiler

This chunk of trail, for about a mile stretch, was variable snow with visible, or hidden deep puddles under it. The second, or second and third soaker took place here, so rather than keep my cadence up, I said fuck it, and took a fucking photo. Looks like a puddle of piss, and I fucking got LOST IN THE CITY! FUCKING AGAIN!

But I'm still proud of myself.

Oh, and bicycle update - I cleared the chemical use with our local environmental committee, and applied salt to the bike tires. I should have them out and cleaned up today! I had not thought to use the salt because for so much of the winter here, it is too cold to work.

You have to be careful about mid-lake areas as well; our tiny lake's entire ice sheet can crack right across on a cold night and leave a broad open path that gets a thin sheet of ice often covered by snowfall - and know your lake. There's a 17km long lake near me that gets a lot of winter recreational use by locals. Because of its size, the number of big streams running into it, its islands, and its elongated shape, you have to know it well to use it safely. There are strong currents in unexpected places, and what looks like safe ice can be entirely caverned out beneath. People who aren't familiar lose snow machines every couple years, and occasionally their lives.

Since NT is Australia, I would bet you meant NWT, which is Canada.

Am I right?

My mail is addressed 'NT, Canada', so no. We have gone to a 2 letter system for abbreviating (why is abbreviating such a long word?)

It used to be NWT, but the territory was much larger back then, and the extra letter could be accommodated.

A few lives are lost in NT each year, it seems. Lots of water, little knowledge.

I am pretty cautious, but will have to make it a bit more deliberate now, with my usual fear gone.

Where I was yesterday, I was only in danger of a soaker, of which I got several. I ran on the ice road, but even though cyclists will continue to use it for a month or so, I will not, since it closed last week.

Honestly, if I thought there was a better place to live in Canada, I would already be there. If I thought there was a better place to live on Earth, I would be working toward moving there, at least.

This place is awesome!
