It's a shitty article.

The idea that the cougars (called 'panther' here for many years) seen in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick since the earliest days of settlement are escaped pets or have wandered in from the West doesn't make sense. Unlike in the US, there's very little history of people making pets out of big cats until quite recently (30 - 40 years ago?), especially in rural areas where these animals have been seen. Besides that, the prevalence of melanistic individuals makes it unlikely that they are just Western cougars.

Both NB and NS have enormous wild forested areas, and the places sightings are most frequently reported are near the edges of those areas. In Cape Breton, you'd rarely have a sighting near Sydney Harbour, which is pretty densely populated and not near any such wild ranges. If you talked to people who live in the CB Highlands in or near the mountains, many of them will have seen one or two over the years - there often seems to be two. A decade will go by and no sightings. Then, over a period of days or a couple weeks, there'll be multiple sightings and occasionally a dead and eaten dog. Then they're gone again. It's plausible they have very big territories.

They are rare, for sure. They could be extinct now, but they were around until at least thirty years ago or less.

Nova Scotia’s Natural Resources Department receives anywhere from 50 to 100 reported cougar sightings each year. However, no one has ever captured the animal and no physical evidence has ever accompanied a cougar sighting.

yeah. I'd say the same if I hadn't seen one.

And lots of those reports very likely were wandering dogs or young bears or completely imagined.

Although also a lot of people never report because they'll not be believed.

Saw my first Bluetongue of the season on the weekend. It wasn't moving for anyone. Air temp was around 7c.
Also found a few other critters.

Neither.

It'll squash, though, when you step on it.

Last night I found a gecko in the garden.

It's only the third one I saw here in over ten years, and the first one was most likely a stowaway from a visit to Queensland. It looked like of a species not known to be a native of South Australia.

We did have a few days nudging the 30 mark until Sunday, but now it's getting quite frigid again. Nothing over 17 for the next week.

That said, gecko sightings have been rare in my vicinity regardless of the weather. My father lived on the Gold Coast and there were dozens of geckos stuck to walls and ceilings every night even though the temperature never got to 30 while we were there. Noisy buggers they were too, but they certainly took care of the mozzies.
