I caught a cricket at the grocery store the other night and brought it home for Homer's amusement. I learned

1. Cats know how to disable creatures they just met. Homer was not happy about the jumping, so took off one leg right away.

2. Crickets taste good. Obviously better than roaches, which he won't eat.

3. Crickets have indigestible parts. Re: vomit analysis.
We often have to buy crickets for the tarantula... so whenever we get a bag of them, one of the cats comes running to my legs, so that I almost trip over him, and mews until he gets one.

So we always let one loose for him to play around with.

He likes to eat moths as well. Grabs them by one paw, and chomps it down in one bite.

As for crickets though, I like insects and all, but crickets are .... utterly revolting. They eat each other, and stink so terribly, like no one's business.

I will give the spider about 6 crickets out of the dozen in about 2 days time. The rest normally die, but there is often just 1 still hopping around the cricket corpses. I used to always free the remaining cricket into the outdoors - because, I felt like they 'deserved' it.

I haven't done this the last few times, and always just end up throwing the last one into the terrarium. But, I feel guilty every time I do it, because of said previous routine. I think I will start doing it again.

He's the second cat I've had that brought home enough substantial prey (rabbits, partridge, squirrels, various rodents, etc.) that I suspect a good cat would be a real asset if you were going hungry for some reason.

There are downsides to letting one's cats out, especially at night, when they are more likely to be prey than catch any (foxes, coyotes, bobcats), but otoh, I only let him out in daylight, and he pretty reliably comes home when called. He's going on 14 and is a healthy active and affectionate kitty (MSG will not approve, but different continent).

how can you hate canned corn? when it is so convenient, and crisp?

I am getting to dislike normal corn, since it turns dry in just a day or so.

I grilled some (already dried) corn on the bbq, and it was chewy.

I ended up slicing off the corn from the remaining cobs, and have it to throw into a soup, at the moment. Bought some canned peas >.> to go into the soup.

Indeed, let him do his thing during the day time It's... kind of impressive that he brings home such 'large' animals, still.

My mom is having a situation with her cat. He came to her door as a stray cat. Her cat had just recently died; (which kind of gives credence to the fact that, I often wonder, if stray cats know who will take them in), and so he sat at the window on her fence and meowed at us from outside.

She fed him and then opened the patio door to him, and he kind of just came in and made it his home. He has always been an outdoor cat though, so my mom let him out all the time -- and same thing, whistled for him to come in around 8pm. Sometimes, she let him stay out later, if he got really antsy inside, but it was no later than 10pm that he was let out.

She recently moved to my sister's place, in which there is still a lot of land (it's kind of in the middle of nowhere). But, what happened was - one night he didn't come back. Mom called the animal shelter and he turned out to be there. He was picked up on their street. Which was strange -- so, it meant, someone must have reported him.

Which is exactly what happened. A neighbour down the way, had reported him. (This was found out by other neighbours who blew the whistle on them). Turns out, they reported him, because they own 3 indoor cats, and KC (mom's cat) had been antagonizing them outside the window.

When my sister talked to these people, they had admitted this was the case, and said that KC could not illegally be let outside, and that he should be on a leash.

Since then, my mom has kept him indoors. And I spoke with her just tonight, and she told me that she feels so bad, and feels like he is losing spirit, due to not being able to go outside. He is essentially an outdoor cat. That is his terrain.

So, she's thinking of going and trying to talk with the neighbours; perhaps providing them with her phone # in case he comes around their place again.

For now, she is going to take him on a walk, with the dog on a leash.

But that's so sad. Doubt he'll very much enjoy that. Hopefully she can come to a common grounds with the neighbour about it.

Sorry your mom and cat are having neighbour troubles.

Seriously, having KC 'antagonising' was likely the most excitement neighbour's indoor kitties have had in ages. What possible harm was done? Their heartrates accelerated for a few minutes?

Occasionally a raccoon or two ramble onto our deck, sometimes they have a staring contest with my cat through the patio doors. Doesn't seem to faze either species.

I like your cats' names. Mine is rather boringly named Tommy.

Pretty cats. I have a soft spot for tuxedos. I had one for 16 years, he was lovely and sweet, never killed anything in his life, brought a raccoon home one evening to offer it some of his dinner.

You understand bobcats are partly responsible for the near extinction of lynx here.
