Strangely compelling pictures of libraries: an occasional series

No. My pics would be better. And the more HDR I see the less I like it.

I'm with you on that MZ. A briefly interesting fad that will hopefully die out as everything starts to look the sameish.

Old style internet.

I got my adult library card early, when I was eleven. I was so excited. I was the official book-picker for the family, would choose 25 books to borrow every Saturday, ride into town with my librarian aunt in the morning and back home sitting on a wooden milk bottle crate in my Dad's milk truck in the afternoon. Loved thos Saturdays so much.

This is an updated version of my first library:

Living on a farm 50 miles / 80 km from the nearest town of any size, and going to a 1-teacher primary school, a bookworm like me couldn't wait for its fortnightly visit. If I'm not mistaken the Swan Hill Bookmobile was the first of its kind in Australia, if not the world. Having an articulated heavy vehicle licence wasn't in the typical librarian skill set.

One memory I treasure is finding a 7-inch single of this song, which opened me up to a whole new world of music beyond what we saw and heard on Countdown of a Sunday night.

That opening piano riff still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, 35 years later...

I'll need an authorization signed in triplicate by all post authors and countersigned by all janitors and their mothers. Calls for Objections thread will be then initiated and run for one month. All being well, it'll be put on The List and someone will get round to it whenever.

Interesting. What's the wirework exterior about?

Haven't got a clue. Still haven't decided if I like it. From certain angles the building looks like a big fancy cake.

I saw the cake immediately.

The interior looks nice. But unless there's a practical purpose for the wirework - perhaps it's a passive solar water heating system? - I'm not a fan.

Yeah, I'm sure it's just overdone decoration. If it was cleverly implementing something like heating or cooling I would be pretty impressed, otherwise waste of whatever metal that is.

As it goes, this is the kind of public project that tends to annoy me. The old Central Library was an awesome building to study inside. Designed in the 1960s it felt like a real academia setting. What's more the tea shop was run by volunteers and it was all largely 'public service'. This place is like a mall, there's an FCUK in there somewhere, has to be a Costa or a Starbucks, and so much empty space!

I forget the architect, it's not a nobody.
