That's actually really good. From the quote, and first impressions of the site (Alan Watts quote), I thought it was a crank.

Extra points if you can tell me the common name for the regions of joined up black pixels on the graph:

geographic features.

eta: Weird, that image won't load, so I made it into a URL.

Some new info for me in there. Always thought virtually all trans-iron nuclei were formed in supernovae shock fronts but here they imply the majority of trans-gold nuclei form as a result of neutron star coalescence.

My uni textbook doesn't use the word 'relative', but my reference book does.

Even when not explicitly stated I think 'relative' is always understood in implicit terms since there are no known absolutes of nuclear stability.

Yeah, the book doesn't really cover what google calls the predicted but undiscovered stuff. And yeah, all the theory is about binding energies which are always finite even if huge, so most everything can theoretically decay in normal situations. It's also related to tunneling, i.e with a particle bound in anything but an infinite potential well there is always a finite probability of suddenly finding it on the other side of the energy barrier.

The aliens are(n't) coming

While scientists have long considered that the bursts could be messages from aliens, the new finding could lend extra credence to that theory. Researchers have been attempting to work out whether a message is encoded in the bursts and it seems they might now have found one.
or ? I won't be reaching for the ray-gun just yet.

All of the ten bursts that have been detected so far have dispersion measures that line up as multiples of a single number: 187.5. The chances of them doing so are 5 in 10,000, the scientists behind the study claim.
why not 1 in 2,000 or 10 in 20,000? what are these scientists trying to say?

Scientific notation is my guess:

P(event) = 5.0 x 10-5.

Anyway, seeing as the event energy is in the realm of requiring a collapsing neutron star or similar to power it, those alien scum are wielding some very heavy duty technology.

What if what the scientists are detecting is the aiming lasers on the alien guns, and we are currently looking up with the intergalactic equivalent of a red dot on our forehead?
