Ice photography and how not to do it.

As promised, here's the icicles photo I mentioned in the Snow and Ice thread which I've drawn a shameful veil over.

Spoiler
Made a regular feck up of this. Thought I had the light coming through the ice, good framing and critical focus and everything and it turned out absolutely nothing like what I was viewing at the time. Just how it goes sometimes.

Seems to be a little like trying to photograph traditional stained glass art - light coming through what you're trying to photograph plus ambient light. Hard to get it right.

Yes, it is a tricky balancing act if trying to capture the whole scene and not only make an illustration of the stained glass. I see from the avatar thread that you are into stained glass art btw. In honour of that I'll break the hidebound traditionalism with a colour digital balanced as best I could

but back on topic with b&w film

May I jump in again?

Crappy quality photo, but for some reason I liked it anyway. Plus I like ravens.

Jump away there Cunt - I like that a lot! A whole heap of ravenness going on there. One of the good things about b&w is you can get away with technical murder and still wind up with a powerful image.

He certainly does - he made me look almost serious in one of them. ;]

Editing the saturation of this pic made no discernible difference (to my eyes) to the natural monochromatic effect. Taken during a walk at Auckland Domain ..

That's lovely and, even though it could be a tree anywhere, it's particularly satisfying to me as I ran in the Auckland Domain a couple of years ago.

Yes, you won't make any difference with saturation or vibrance which only apply to colour. You can tweak things with exposure, contrast, highlights etc. but can't significantly change the tonal range of the original - which is why people go for high dynamic range techniques (HDR) these days.

This has a nice soft sky tonality range against which the delicate tracery of the tree silhouette works really well imo. Did you render it from a colour original or is it in fact still in colour but only greys present in the scene?

Here's a horse chestnut last spring at one of my local parks. The grass is carpeted with blossom from the tree.

Wow.

i like the look of horse chestnut trees - they've been used to line streets in some residential parts of Hfx. but it's much more majestic in this park setting - also wonderful black and white subject!

An avenue of those things is a sight to behold indeed! I used to stay with a friend in Leicestershire when the kids were small and he took us to a country road in Autumn which was long and ruler straight and lined both sides with massive mature chestnuts. We were the conker kings

Eta: forgot this.

you guys don't take no for an answer. Well, I can't recall what the actual colours were now. It's a strange thing but when you only have mono film to work with it seems you think in mono only - and that's maybe not a bad thing. Anyway, something like

Spoiler

I guess.
