WTF weather

I just did a forum search for "weather".
It looks like we have a disproportionate number of Canadians on here and no thread dedicated to weather?????????????????

Usually around the end of February/ early March I look at the 14 day forecast to see if they are calling for any days with a high above freezing.
A little later I would look for days with lows above freezing.

We've been getting 14 day forecasts like that already.

And I've been watching the hourly forecasts we've had a buncha nights where it warmed up during the night and other days where it got colder during the day.

It's been a balmy day here. 53F/12C at the moment (6:45 PM). It's supposed to get down to 40F tonight.

I've had my habanero plants outside the last 2 days/nights. It's been incredibly easy to keep them healthy over the winter, though they aren't getting enough sunlight to produce flowers or fruit. I have high hopes for a good crop this year.

I wore flip flops on my walk today, my toes weren't chilly at all.

It's been raining for the last week in South-East Queensland and Northern New South Wales and there has been some flooding. We have been lucky this year, our local river didn't even cover the bridge near our house.

This was last year during the Big Floods that killed far too many people in Toowoomba and Grantham in the Lockyer Valley.

The view from our lounge room, round 8am, river rising, bridge still clear.

One hour later;

By twelve the river was ten lateral metres from our neighbour's fence and still rising;

We went down to have a look an hour later when the water peaked:

We were very lucky. The river peaked at 14 metres, twice it's usual height. What was concerning was the text messages we kept getting to evacuate. Which was great, but we were cut off in all directions. High ground was ten metres up the road from us on a median strip.

But despite that we got off so much easier than the people of the Lockyer Valley and Toowoomba and the low lying areas of Brisbane.

I really feel for the people of the Gold Coast this weekend.

Speaking as a Canadian, we're superstitiously scared to mention the weather this winter in case it hears us and changes. Except for a few very brief cold spells, it's been remarkably mild. Bro D, Amok, and myself are in the Maritimes, and we have weak ice and in most places not much snow.

It's snowing right now but is expected to turn to rain later.

OTOH, returning from Cape Breton Monday night we ran into a localised snowstorm that dumped 10cm on the road in about 20 min. We almost decided to hole up for the night. The driving conditions were terrifying until we were about an hour and a half from Halifax, at which point the sky cleared and the roads appeared almost bare.

Enough weather for you?

Here in the centre of the known Universe we don't have any snow.
And it looks like it will get above freezing almost every day for the next two weeks.

It looks like the forecasts are getting a little more accurate.
For the last year they couldn't forcast the day after tomorrow at all.
Usually 3 or 4 days is accurate.

It's raining today. I believe it's the second day of rain since the new year.

This is the rainy season. Not good.

Though often, a dry January is followed by February monsoons. One can hope.

The lack of snow pack in the woods is alarming the farming community here. Things could be a bit droughty in spring without it. Last year we had a a cold dry spring, not at all normal for here - it's usually not quite as cold and much wetter.

Frogs have been singing here since Apr. 12. Past two days have been sunny and warm, shirtsleeve weather. Helped a friend plant all her cold tolerant veg crops yesterday, earliest she's ever been able to have the soil properly tilled and prepared to do that. Normally it's still way too cold and wet in her area. The soil even felt warm, digging your hands in it, even 15cm deep.
