dumb tourists story

Quote:
A baby bison has been killed by Yellowstone National Park rangers after tourists put it into their car because of a "misplaced concern" for its welfare, the park said.

The visitors from outside the United States came across the bison alone and decided to drive the calf to a park facility, unaware that interference with newborn animals could cause their mothers to reject them, park managers said in a statement.

Yellowstone rangers repeatedly tried to reunite the calf with the herd but those efforts failed.

Ultimately, the abandoned calf was euthanased because it repeatedly approached people and cars along the roadway, raising safety concerns, officials said

.

.
Tourists entering Yellowstone are warned to stay at least 22 meters away from bison and to give even wider berth to creatures such as bears and wolves.
um... yeah .. i'll give the bears and wolves a wide berth all right

People don't though.

They manage to get mauled and even eaten in zoos where the animals are in cages. Out in the open, that kind of person is too permanently stupefied to live.

that poor bison baby

attached to that story was vid footage of some stupid bitch annoying an adult bison AT ARMS LENGTH. I think the reason it didn't kill her is because it was badly injured/dying.

what about that incident whereby two guys were taunting a tiger, from way up (10m?) above the enclosure and it leapt up and killed one of them? and then tiger experts said "duh, of course it was capable of doing that, given sufficient motivation."

Seriously, had they never seen what house cats can do, could they not extrapolate that into what 400kg of cat might possibly do?

Partly true:

Quote:
...The real issue is disturbance, not smell. For example, birds that have been flushed from a nest by humans or other predators do sometimes abandon their eggs or young, according to bird biologists who do nest surveys. It is never a good idea to disturb any wildlife – to protect both animals and people – and it most cases it is also illegal.

The myth about human scent causing abandonment is also untrue for most other animals, including mammals. Baby animals that have been handled by biologists are usually reunited with their mothers, who do not appear bothered by the biologists’ scent on their young. Again, disturbance is the real problem. When handling baby animals, biologists must work quickly and carefully to minimize disturbance. Even so, the parents do sometimes fail to reunite with their young.
http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm...rticles_id=426

Good example that I know about is that people will find young fawns resting alone, no sign of the mother. They assume it's orphaned, but in fact the mother browses away from the fawn because it's safer, as fawns don't produce much predator attracting scent. If humans then move the fawn, thinking they are rescuing it, even if they put it back, the mother may have already returned and discovered it missing. Eventually she gives up looking.

With baby birds, especially when they are learning to fly, you often find them on the ground, having exhausted themselves, with the parents chirping anxiously from nearby. They'll be okay if you leave them alone, but are very vulnerable to predators. If you know there are cats, dogs, crows, etc. likely to show up soonish, it's okay to gently pick the bird up and stick it in a nearby bush where it isn't quite so easy to get at or be seen. The parent/s are watching, the nest is close, and the baby has a better chance of surviving long enough to make another flight effort. I've done this often, since if I'm out, so is my cat, for one thing. Most of the time the baby flaps away successfully after a few minutes.
