Places to go, things to do

We're heading to Europe in five weeks. Awesome huh?

We're going to be all over the place and I'm asking for things to do and places to see. Unfortunately our accommodation is locked in so things to see will have to be on the way between points a and b.

We arrive in Nice on the 29 May and stay there overnight. Apart from a swim in the Mediterranean what else is there to do?

Next morning we drive quickly to Monaco before turning around and going to a village called Rians, near Aix-en-Provence. We're staying there for three nights. In that time we'll go to Marseilles, Avignon and Arles. And the Camargue, a wetlands preserve that plays host to flamingoes and wild horses.

After that we drive to Tuscany for my sister's wedding. We'll stay at the Villa Fabbroni for eight nights. In that time we'll do day trips to Rome (including Vatican City) and Venice, dropping in on San Marino on the way back. And of course a day trip to Florence to eat the oldest ice-cream in the world, made with champagne.

Then it's a quick drive to Ireland.

Well, sort of. We have a hell of drive to Geneva on the first day, then a leisurely trip across Switzerland, afternoon tea in Vaduz, Liechtenstein and then overnight in Innsbruck, Austria.

The next day we'll drive the Romantische Strasse, the Romantic Road. It was made up by travel agents to draw tourists and it works. It winds it's way through several iconic German towns before spitting tourists out at Wurzburg. We will drive to the other side of Frankfurt to an equally iconic German town called Idstein. Next morning we head to Luxembourg so I can meet the most excellent Stormlight from Freethought-Forum. After lunch it's a four hour drive to a house in Villejuif in Paris.

We stay in Paris for three nights. Three nights of art, culture, food and wine. We'll go The Louvre, Versailles, Centre George Pompidou and up the Tour Eiffel.

Afterwards we drive to Calais, put our van on the Eurostar and go to England. It's one night and a day and a half in London, and it will be busy. We had already planned to go up the London Eye, Houses of Parliament, Tower of London et.al. But then Warner Bros. went and opened a Harry Potter museum so our 17 year old is making us go there too. I think we'll have to leave a lot for the return trip.

We stay in Portsmouth, my father-in-law's birthplace, for two nights so my wife can explore. THen it's a drive through Wales, a stay overnight in Caernarfon and a ferry trip over to Dublin.

We'll stay with my mother in Naas, Co. Kildare for three weeks. In that time we'll go all over the place too I expect.

We fly out of Heathrow six weeks after arriving in Europe. We may get to London via Scotland. That would make Mrs. Aden happy.

So what else should we see and do? What should we eat? What should we drink?

And you are looking for ideas about what to see? You seem to have it covered. A day and a half in London! Travesty. Portsmouth was a hole. Please tell me they've knocked it down and started again. Three days in Paris is about right to take in about a quarter of the louvre. The Mona Lisa is bigger than you've been lead to believe by everyone saying its smaller than you'll expect. Montmartre is a tourist trap but worth a visit. Watch out for strangers offering friendship bracelets or finding watches near you.

Be careful crossing the road. Anywhere.

And with five kids I think we'll only be in the Louvre for a few hours before they get bored.

Your itinerary sounds pretty full already ... Sparing some room for a little spontaneity and for more leisurely appreciation of your surroundings may be appreciated.

It all sounds so good... Enjoy!

I'll just mention my aunt and uncle had boy, girl, boy, girl, boy and then the next time it was twin girls. I think terror caused them to stop at that number.

Though I really think five children is a kind of ideal number for the kids - allows for lots of interesting sibling relationships.

Sounds like an exciting trip. have fun.
